The Systems Administration -3 (Shift Lead -Night) is the most Senior Technical System resource in the PayPal Command Center and is responsible for evaluating risk and managing 250k+ system’s. Reliability, Availability, Scalability (RAS) are the key operational function. System Lead must be confident and comfortable communicating from the individual-contributor level up through C-level staff during high-stress situations.

The Systems Administration -3 (Shift Lead -Night) is the most Senior Technical System resource in the PayPal Command Center and is responsible for evaluating risk and managing 250k+ system’s.  Reliability, Availability, Scalability (RAS)  are the key operational function.

During critical availability-impacting incidents, the shift lead  must quickly assess total technical and business impact, and determine the best recovery operational plan.   Operate across PayPal command center (PPCC) SREops, PPCC TDOs (technical duty officers), Database administrators,  organizational boundaries to protect our customers, their data, and the availability of all PayPal services.

Systems shift lead is a shift-based position with no regular on-call responsibilities.  During a shift, this lead must maintain total site awareness, detecting metric and service deviations, monitoring and evaluating change, proactively identifying potential issues, and working directly with his team and Site recovery engineering team to resolve technical incidents before they escalate to business impactful issues.

System Lead must be confident and comfortable communicating from the individual-contributor level up through C-level staff during high-stress situations.

Requirements:

You have the desire to take PayPal to the next level. BS degree in Information Technology or related technical field involving coding with 10 years of experience (or) MS in Computer Science and Engineering with 5 years of experience is required.

System lead must be versatile  in container orchestration platforms, virtual infrastructure (OpenStack, KVM), REST, Object oriented technologies, automation tools like ansible/puppet, load balancers, monitoring tools (Nagios/Zabbix/Sensu/IRIS) , build and process tools (git, Jenkins, Rally, Jira, ServiceNow ), programming skills in c, Perl, python and go language.

Strong understanding and working knowledge of networking principles and Experience with algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis and software design. Strong debugging and problem-solving skills. Self-starter with excellent communication skills. Established record working in fast paced changing environment, large scale applications across the stack

Roles and Responsibilities

•         Assess system service impacts, create recovery plans,  flex-ups, flex-downs and provide step execution approval for backline teams during critical incident restoration activities. 

•         Develop self-remediation or self-healing  tools to protect production and engineering infra systems. Engage with engineering partners and enable them to build the right tools for site.

•         Lead the night shift SysOps (System Operational) team and  other teams in the PayPal Command Center and resources outside the command center in investigating the reason for outage of the event and work towards mitigating / resolution of hypervisors, physical and virtual infra assets.  

•         Serve as the final level of escalation for exception handling in the change management process and for emergency changes and maintenance of the PayPal live site.

•         Work in partnership with the Lead SRE to ensure incident details are documented according to critical incident process.

•         Maintain accurate shift-level documentation for ongoing work, site-configuration deltas, and process adjustments on a daily basis.

•         Participate in site status meetings, identify and provide feedback on problems identified within the site as part of proactive investigation or as a result of critical incidents.

•         Participate and execute in change control initiatives.

•         Identify recurring problems and work with problem management and other stakeholders to drive permanent solution.

•         Build, enhance, recommend new tools and tools improvements for better site monitoring , site management and quick resolution.

•         Develop and maintain standard operating procedure (SOP) documentation  for use by all of PayPal operations  interacting with the live site.
