At Core Data Platforms, we’re looking for passionate engineers who want to get their hands dirty automating, building and maintaining the infrastructure and standards that supported 210 million active accounts and $106 billion dollars in payment volume last quarter, while delivering five nines of uptime. The Core Data Platforms team is responsible for fulfilling all data infrastructure needs of PayPal site. This includes systems support, storage engineering, database and site operations. We operate at massive scale – it’s a job like no other!

What you'll be doing...

  • Transforming the functional work experience between the database stack development and operations teams by breaking down functional silos.
  • Understanding the people, the culture and how the organization runs to build a strategy that focuses on simplifying the overall operating environment to achieve the goal of continuous delivery.
  • Replacement of manual tasks performed by more traditional system administrators and engineering roles via automation/scripting languages like Python, Ruby, Bash, Shell, etc. to ensure consistent performance of manual tasks by removing the human component and allowing teams to spend focus on the broader goals of PayPal
  • Ability to implement automation technologies and tools at any level, from requirements to development to testing and operations Systems & Storage Engineering
  • Systems administration and support over enterprise Linux & Solaris and AIX systems environments
  • Configuration management over the Linux and UNIX infrastructure
  • Develop, implement, deploy and sustain back tier infrastructure and engineering standards
  • Ensure all systems deployed are secure and hardened from any known vulnerabilities
  • Storage Engineering  and support over SAN, iSCSI and NAS storage environments
  • Continuously improve performance and systems monitoring leveraging COTS or by developing custom tools
  • Support engineering or operational initiatives related to the team’s support matrix
  • Ensure all solutions and recommended solutions are consistent IT standards and best practices

Position Prerequisite Skill Sets…

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or other STEM discipline
  • Seven years UNIX Systems, Storage administration or automation experience within large 24/7 mission critical enterprise environments.
  • Source Control (like Git, Bitbucket, Svn, VSTS etc)
  • Continuous Integration (like Jenkins, Bamboo, VSTS )
  • Infrastructure Automation (like Puppet, Chef, Ansible)
  • Deployment Automation & Orchestration (like Jenkins, VSTS, Octopus Deploy)
  • Container Concepts (LXD, Docker)
  • Orchestration (Kubernetes, Mesos, Swarm) 
  • Cloud (like AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Openstack)
  • Ability to implement automation technologies and tools at any level, from requirements to development to testing and operations
  • Basic experience and knowledge with network and Internet concepts, services and protocols
  • Applied experience. You’ve built, broken, and rebuilt software and hardware.
  • Working knowledge of network protocols and be well versed in the IP stack.
  • Working knowledge of web technologies (such as HTTP, HTML/DOM, JavaScript, CSS, AJAX)
  • Foundational knowledge Object-Oriented Design Principles, Data Structures, Algorithms, SQL/NoSQL, Operating Systems, Software Engineering
