As a Distinguished Software Architect in our fast-moving, small entrepreneurial team, you will design, build, and optimize infrastructure of our multiple recommendation systems, as well as the ML pipeline and data infrastructure. You will own projects end-to-end and drive design decisions that affect millions of users worldwide, using technologies like Apache Spark, Finagle, Apache Cassandra, Redis, Aerospike and Apache Kafka. You will lead other members of the team and drive changes that ensure our system uses state of the art technology.

What is the opportunity?

The Merchant Services AI team designs, builds, maintains, and improves the machine learning models and ML infrastructure that are used by PayPal's large enterprise clients. Our suite of AI/ML products allow large retailers to easily enable state of the art recommendation systems on their websites and emails, and directly increase their sales, revenue, and user engagement metrics.

What you will do?

  • Design and development of distributed stream processing systems and work on scaling and parallelizing existing AI infrastructure
  • Use Big Data technologies such as Spark/Hadoop to design and build web-scale data pipelines used for feature engineering for AI algorithms
  • Mentor and lead other system engineers on the team, set the technology vision to ensure our team is using state of the art technology in AI infrastructure
  • Continuously push the limits of technology in AI/ML infrastructure by innovating and staying involved with the external community

What do you need to succeed?

  • 6+ years of full time relevant experience, MS/PhD in Computer Science or a related field
  • Strong knowledge and extensive experience in Scala
  • Extensive experience in Apache Spark, Finagle, Apache Cassandra, Redis, Aerospike and Apache Kafka
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage projects from inception to execution; responsible, independent, and disciplined, taking ownership of your projects,
  • Experience in leading others and innovating in AI infrastructure domain
  • Penchant for great algorithm design / strong CS fundamentals
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and make pragmatic engineering decisions in a short amount of time
