Incident Response Engineering (IRE) org is looking for a Manager to manage a selected group of Site Reliability Engineers (SRE) who ensure the availability and reliability of the PayPal site and services and are always striving to do the right thing for all our internal and external customers. SRE Ops engineers in the PayPal Command Center are the core of PayPal’s Critical Incident Response Engineering team. In addition to actively contributing to PayPal’s monitoring and automation platforms, SRE Ops engineers will leverage their system administration knowledge and software engineering skills to quickly identify and remediate production impacting incidents.

Responsibilities: 

• Manage a high performing global team of Site Reliability Engineers who work on a 24x7 shift-based schedule. 

• Provide leadership and guidance to Incident Response Engineering (IRE) teams. 

• Provide technical coaching and lead direct reports and other members of adjacent support teams to the highest level of performance. 

• Evaluate performance of direct reports and offer career development guidance. 

• Handle escalations from internal stakeholders and manage critical issues to resolution. 

• Collaborate with tools teams to build effective monitoring and triaging tools. 

• Own KPIs on site stability and performance. 

• Own KPIs on service performance which includes MMTD, MTTE and MTTR target metrics.  

• Lead incident management for large site incidents when necessary.  

• Lead post incident reviews when necessary.  

• Manage technical projects and initiatives. 

• Assist with executive communication to senior leadership teams on status of site incidents. 

• Build relationships with Infrastructure teams and Software Development teams. 

• Identify recurring system and application issues and enable the SREs to work with Cloud teams, Infra teams, Product Development, Vendors and other stakeholders in investigating and resolving cause. 

• Handle escalations from PayPal partners and merchants about critical issues. 

• Review and approve external communications regarding outages to PayPal merchants, partners and customers. 

• Ensure 24x7 coverage with business continuity principles. 

  

Qualifications: 

• 5+ years of managing Software Development, Operations, or DevOps teams. 

• 10+ years of Software Development, DevOps, or Operations experience. 

• Experience in managing 24/7 global teams and remote employees. 

• Strong verbal and written communication skills with a target audience including senior and executive management. 

• Experience in evaluating team member performance and offering career development guidance. 

• Experience in providing technical coaching to direct reports. 

• Experience in collaborating with global stakeholder teams. 

• Excellent debugging and problem solving skills. 

• Experience in facilitating technical conversations between engineering and operations teams. 

• Experience in Linux, scripting languages (Shell & Python) and automation. 

• Experience with database concepts (SQL or NO SQL). 

• Experience in troubleshooting application, system and network issues in highly available multi-tiered production systems. 

• Experience in Core Java concepts and JavaScript preferred. 

• Experience in building & maintaining production site monitoring tools. 

• Strong knowledge of automation and orchestration tools in a production environment, software release process including release pipeline, and Problem/Change Management practices.
