Job Description

Fueled by a fundamental belief that having access to financial services creates opportunity, PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL) is committed to democratizing financial services and empowering people and businesses to join and thrive in the global economy. Our open digital payments platform gives PayPal’s 325 million active account holders the confidence to connect and transact in new and powerful ways, whether they are online, on a mobile device, in an app, or in person. Through a combination of technological innovation and strategic partnerships, PayPal creates better ways to manage and move money, and offers choice and flexibility when sending payments, paying or getting paid. Available in more than 200 markets around the world, the PayPal platform, including Braintree, Venmo and Xoom enables consumers and merchants to receive money in more than 100 currencies, withdraw funds in 56 currencies and hold balances in their PayPal accounts in 25 currencies.

Braintree lets you move money from one place to another safely and securely. Every time you pay for an Uber ride, book a stay through Airbnb, or pay with PayPal when you check out online, you’re probably using our product. It sounds complex (and it is), but we make it so simple you can’t tell we’re there. We're looking for a Senior Member of Technical Staff to lead the unification of our technical stack with the broader PayPal Inc.

The Enterprise and Partner Segment Solutions team at PayPal is looking for a Senior Member of Technical Staff to lead the unification of our technical stack with the broader PayPal Inc.

PayPal's Enterprise platform used by some of our largest customers is primarily based on the Braintree stack. Over time these systems have successfully developed separately from the consumer and SMB-oriented PayPal Inc technology. In order to allow for better re-use of technology and tools, better integration, compliance, security, collaboration, talent mobility, among other benefits, we will start an effort to integrate the Braintree stack more deeply to the PayPal platform, aligning to company-wide traceability standards (think CAL, FCIs), standard alerting and incident management protocols, standard tech stack (e.g. Java+Raptor, Node+Kraken+React, etc.), with inner source standards, leveraging other services and platforms yet to be identified, among other things to be defined and over a multi-year journey.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with the PayPal and/or Braintree stacks, a leadership track record with ability to show the way to the broader technical community, ability to plan and run complete programs, ability to partner with central platform teams to collaborate on solutions, evolve platforms and get the support to execute this program. The candidate should also have hands-on experience and ability to stay grounded in details through all phases and aspects of this program.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Product, Platform and Engineering leaders across the team to identify the right areas of convergence and opportunities, and then develop a convergence plan.

  • Partner with TPX teams (DPX, InfoSec, etc.) to evolve platforms to become truly multi-tenant, and then lead the integration to those platforms.

  • Lead the program for tech stack convergence, including establishing a phased approach and regular milestones, as well as providing regular leadership updates on progress.

  • Provide hands-on leadership to various technical solutions and projects, as well as actively participate on everything from prototyping to implementation and all required details.

Skillset:

  • Software Development background with ability to analyze and improve existing codebases.

  • Proficiency in managing cloud based large-scale infrastructure. Experience with building solutions on the Cloud (ideally AWS).

  • Expertise in designing and troubleshooting large scale distributed systems.

  • Demonstrable and in-depth experience with Java stack. Experience with Spring Boot or Raptor is highly desirable.

  • Some experience with JavaScript and Node.js desired. React.js experience desired.

  • Experience with Unix/Linux operating systems internals and administration.

  • Established experience with monitoring/logging tools and best practices.

  • Experience working in an Agile environment, including Extreme Programming practices like Iterative Development, Continuous Integration (and Deployment) and Test-Driven Development.

  • Experience managing/overseeing teams of FTE and/or contractors to accelerate programs.

  • Great analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communicator.

Behaviors

  • Maintain an inclusive mindset in evaluating all opinions and options.  Leverage stakeholders across the organizations. Solve problems creatively and bring people along.

  • High emotional quotient, business acumen, and empathy for stakeholder needs. Ability to create clarity and space to brainstorm. Be a bridge to resolve conflicts amicably and learn together.

  • Create and lead a followership for the convergence initiative. Facilitate deep ownership and accountability so that everyone in the process feels a sense of progress in joint accomplishments.

  • Adapt to changing constraints and conditions.
