The PayPal Issuance team is looking for a talented, creative, and passionate back end engineer. As a self-motivated and enthusiastic member of our team, you will work with extremely talented peers in a fun environment building performance efficient, highly scalable, configurable and available systems. You will work in an agile environment with a focus on problem solving and engineering excellence.

This team is responsible for the issuing and payment tokenization platform. This includes tokens and cards for online, offline, NFC, and mobile transactions. The primary duty of the software engineer is to design, develop, implement, and maintain Java based components.   

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, developing, and testing of features and functions delivered via applications and services
  • Develop efficient, elegant, clean code without unnecessary complication or abstraction
  • Lead code review sessions
  • Collaborating with peers and senior engineers/architects both within your team and across the organization to create technical solutions
  • Working with product managers using Agile methodologies to deliver high quality user experiences that delight PayPal’s customers
  • Working with security engineers to create attack resilient applications
  • Working with the operations teams to ensure your applications and services are highly available and reliable.
  • Passionate about low latency systems
  • Ability to deal with high volume data


  • Development experience with high-traffic backend services.
  • Mastery of the fundamentals of Java, including JDK8, JUnit, Maven, Jenkins, and Sonar.
  • Mastery of open-source Java Frameworks, including Spring MVC.
  • Direct experience with concepts such as SOA, REST APIs, message-based communication.
  • Experience with Git, Jira, Tomcat, SQL, Couchbase.
  • Experience with Agile and Scrum.
  • Experience with payment processing, card networks, EMV, ISO 8583 a plus.
  • Must be able to handle on-call rotations and work in the local office.

Basic Qualifications (must be included in each posting):

  • 3 to 5 years of experience working with large-scale server side development in a production environment, especially J2EE web server development
  • CS Degree or equivalent
