The PayPal embedded Site Reliability Engineering (eSRE) team is looking for a quality-driven engineer who is ready to constantly challenge his/her mind with a mixture of troubleshooting, code developing, hacking, networking and more. The eSRE Team is a selected group of PayPal technologists always striving to do the right thing for all our internal and external customers. The Team provides a unique opportunity to get not only a depth of knowledge in PayPal’s Payment System, but also a breadth of knowledge across PayPal products, teams and initiatives. Core Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Triage and troubleshoot escalations for a wide variety of PayPal products.
  • Monitor, detect and troubleshoot issues during code rollouts on the live site. Analyze real-time data to determine issue severity and impact and advise Product Development and Release Management on release GO/NO-GO.
  • Advise management and appropriate groups on customer impacting issues and provide recognized technical and business leadership while recommending appropriate actions.
  • Identify process gaps and implement process improvements to increase operational efficiency.
  • Participate in the development of tools, systems and processes aimed at improving product supportability and overall support productivity.
  • Work with different groups to develop and improve monitors for PayPal products and infrastructure.
  • When needed provide direct support to PayPal merchants and their technical teams.
  • Identify, verify and document irregularities in PayPal functionality, including posting appropriate bugs.
  • Work with Site Operation teams to address sites issues.
  • Weekend support, on a rotating schedule, is required.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • First responders to any system and application events/impacts for issues with our customer domain.
  • Work independently and within a team to triage and remediate production system and application incidents. Practice sustainable incident response and blameless post mortems.
  • Develop and enhance production monitoring and management capabilities leveraging existing platforms and tools.
  • Work with Technical Duty Officer and other support teams inside and outside the Command Center in troubleshooting, escalating, and resolving critical site incidents.
  • Identify recurring system and application issues and work with all teams and stakeholders in investigating and resolving any issue.
  • Contribute or build from scratch applications to help our functional teams operate efficiently on a day to day basis.
  • Understand PayPal’s basic production system architecture and design in order to better align improvement strategies.
  • Engage in and improve the whole lifecycle of services—from inception and design, through deployment, operation and refinement.
  • Last but not the least, enable reduction of failed customer interactions.


  • You have the desire to take PayPal to the next level.
  • BS degree in Computer Science or related technical field involving coding (e.g., physics or mathematics), or equivalent practical experience.
  • Expertise using Linux command line
  • Experience with algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis and software design.
  • Strong understanding and working knowledge of networking principles and OS operation and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with load balancing principles
  • Familiarity with config management (puppet a plus)
  • Development skills in at least one scripting language
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
  • Established record working in fast paced changing environment, large scale applications across the stack
