As a member of PayPal's Strategic Architecture team based in APAC, the Senior Enterprise Architect will be a thought leader in the design, development, and communication of patterns, best practices, and implementations across all of our technology teams and business units.

The ideal candidate should be a self-motivated technologist with excellent verbal and written communication skills. He or she will have a good understanding of business acumen in order to translate between high level requirements and detailed software designs. Experience delivering enterprise or internet scale software solutions in C++ and Java is a must. Job responsibilities will include:

  • Providing technical leadership to product development, management, and business units to strengthen and extend PayPal's core architecture

  • Collecting metrics and analyzing existing designs and implementations to determine ways to improve existing capabilities, and designing and architecting world-class technology solutions to meet new and anticipated business and technical needs

  • Delivering high quality, high performance architectures and designs that balance availability, scalability, and functionality with rapid time to market

  • Working directly with development teams to address high priority technical challenges and escalations

Architects within Strategic Architecture are expected to have a holistic view across the technology organization in order to:

  • Drive technical designs to consensus and approval as a leader within PayPal's cross-functional technology team
  • Define and deliver patterns, reference architectures, best practices, and where appropriate, implementations, for technology design and execution
  • Set strategic technical direction across PayPal's federated architecture group, and lead cross functional efforts to improve technical capabilities and non-functional attributes across all architectural domains
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of most or all technical domains at PayPal, with the ability to decompose complex systems into a collection of components aligned to those domains.
  • Represent PayPal's technology organization in discussions with business units and external partners
  • Guide the selection of technologies across multiple projects and/or teams
  • Build prototypes and educate the business of new technologies and techniques
  • Identify and mentor critical engineering talent; identify and recruit technical leaders into the organization. Train and mentor other developers.

  • Fluency in C++ and Java
  • Demonstrated experience with large-scale software development, OLTP systems, and/or high-volume websites and web services.
  • Experience in consumer-oriented product development and marketing technologies
  • Thrive in an environment of constant change
  • Ability to make high quality decisions with limited information
  • Be a quick learner undaunted by complex systems
  • Experience in the payments or eCommerce industry is a plus
  • Experience with large scale data systems is a plus

BS EE or CS degree; 8+ years related experience (or Masters and 6 + years related experience or PhD and 4+ years experience
