Job Description

Fueled by a fundamental belief that having access to financial services creates opportunity, PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL) is committed to democratizing financial services and empowering people and businesses to join and thrive in the global economy. Our open digital payments platform gives PayPal’s 254 million active account holders the confidence to connect and transact in new and powerful ways, whether they are online, on a mobile device, in an app, or in person. Through a combination of technological innovation and strategic partnerships, PayPal creates better ways to manage and move money, and offers choice and flexibility when sending payments, paying or getting paid. Available in more than 200 markets around the world, the PayPal platform, including Braintree, Venmo and Xoom enables consumers and merchants to receive money in more than 100 currencies, withdraw funds in 56 currencies and hold balances in their PayPal accounts in 25 currencies.

Xoom, a PayPal Service is revolutionizing the international money transfer market by providing people with an easy, secure, convenient and cost-effective means of sending money worldwide. Our infrastructure monitoring team is looking for a talented DevOps Engineer to help strengthen our world-class business. In this role you will help shape the future of mission critical systems. You will collaborate closely with engineering, operations and technology groups to define and maintain our infrastructure pipeline.

As a valued team member you will design, provision, maintain and support logging, alerting, tracing, and time-series metric systems.  This role is mission critical.  We provide visibility into the organization's applications, servers/VMs/containers, and business KPIs.  As part of the Infrastructure Engineering team, we interface directly with most other technical orgs, including NetOps, SiteOps, ProdOps, Platform, RISK, InfoSec, Mobile, DataOps, etc.

The position tends to be split 50/50 between project work and support, although that ratio can vary dramatically depending on the day.  We use a rotating schedule; every day one team member takes point for all support while the others have protected heads-down project time.

You should be detail-oriented and have habitually good follow-up with follow through.  Even though our team operates with minimal stress, we regularly interface with other teams who are troubleshooting heightened stress situations: service interruptions, application crashes, etc.  The ability to remain calm and a sense of humor while providing support to those other teams is key, and helps keep everyone focused on solving the task at hand.  We pride ourselves in being helpful, accommodating to others' business requirements, and getting the job done correctly and accurately.

Job Requirements:

  • A collaborative and productive team oriented attitude
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to clearly express technical ideas
  • Creative problem solving.  Not just Googling around for an answer to a problem, but occasionally (or frequently!) having flashes of insight that move an investigation forward
  • Administrative proficiency on Linux systems: installing and configuring applications, troubleshooting performance issues, debugging network connectivity at the packet level
  • Familiarity with at least one provisioning system: puppet, chef, ansible, terraform, etc.
  • Knowledge of REST and web services
  • Scripting: bash, python, and/or perl
  • Comfortable with modern file encodings: JSON, XML
  • Version control
  • Working knowledge of containers, virtual machines, and bare metal hardware

Desired Experience:

  • Experience with any of the following monitoring tools: Nagios, Grafana, InfluxDB, Instana, Splunk, or types of monitoring tools: alerting, logging, tracing, and time-series metrics
  • 8+ years of experience managing services running on *nix systems and/or mixture of environments
  • Both relational and NoSQL databases
  • Development of unit and acceptance tests

We're a purpose-driven company whose beliefs are the foundation for how we conduct business every day. We hold ourselves to our One Team Behaviors which demand that we hold the highest ethical standards, to empower an open and diverse workplace, and strive to treat everyone who is touched by our business with dignity and respect. Our employees challenge the status quo, ask questions, and find solutions. We want to break down barriers to financial empowerment. Join us as we change the way the world defines financial freedom.
