PayPal is a truly global payments platform that is available to people in more than 200 markets, allowing customers to get paid in more than 100 currencies, withdraw funds to their bank accounts in 57 currencies and hold balances in their PayPal accounts in 26 currencies The successful candidate will be a data steward coming in on the ground floor of a new team for the First Line of Defense focusing on data and privacy. The new role will coordinate across the engineering and business groups, as well as the Compliance and the Technology Platform Experience teams. In partnership with the Data Steward Lead, you will participate in building a program for data management in alignment with the PayPal Data Governance policy. We are looking for someone who makes well-thought-out decisions on complex or ambiguous data issues and establishes the data stewardship and information management strategy and direction for Customer Experience. The goal will be to implement a program to identify and document data elements, including tiering, identification of owners, source documentation, lineage, usage rules, definition, etc. The successful candidate will interact with product managers, engineers, DBAs, architects, and the subject matter experts in Compliance, Data Governance, and Privacy. We are focused on bringing in an individual who possesses a strong level of data knowledge, business acumen, excellent communication skills, and superior problem-solving skills.

The Successful Candidate will:

  • Partner with the product and engineering, Technology Platform Experience, and Compliance organizations to
    • Assist in developing a repeatable process which allows for a controlled, managed approach in completing the initial gathering of information, e.g., 
      • Build an approach which limits impact to the business (where possible)
      • Get the data once and limit repeat meetings
      • Develop artifacts for tracking status
    • Coordinate with the Sr. Data Steward and align with the Data Governance and Compliance teams to establish reporting of roadmap deliverables
      • Design and build a dashboard for reporting
    • Document the data elements, e.g., definitions, tiering, SLAs, quality rules and assessment, change control execution, etc.
    • Responsible for the maintenance of the Business Glossary 
    • Responsible for solving issues and communicating resolutions 
    • Support special projects and initiatives:  special projects vary from strategic initiatives to day-to-day operations.  

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, computer science, information systems, or equivalent experience
  • 3-5 years of hands-on data experience working with data architecture or data engineering
  • Results-oriented, diligent, and works with a sense of urgency; assertive, responsible for your own work (self-directed), have a strong affinity for defining work in deliverables, and be willing to commit to deadlines
  • Possesses knowledge and expertise in data modeling and management techniques and strategies
  • Working knowledge of application, data and infrastructure disciplines
  • Proven ability to quickly earn the trust of peers and key stakeholders; mobilize and motivate teams; set direction and approach; resolve conflict; deliver tough messages with grace; execute with limited information and ambiguity
  • Demonstrated working relationships that enables self-direction 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and influence cross-functional engagement & execution
