PayPal is committed to combating Money Laundering, Terrorism Financing, and related financial crimes around the world.  The Global Financial Crimes (GFC) organization is comprised of specialized teams dedicated to developing and implementing effective policies, advanced analytics and thorough investigative processes that consider the risks posed by PayPal’s products, customers, transaction volumes and jurisdictions in which PayPal operates.  The GFC Analytics organization is looking for a highly talented AML expert to help drive the development of typologies that may be indicative of possible money laundering or other financial crimes.  This role requires the ability to work across both policy and technical teams to deliver a best-in-class suite of detections tailored to PayPal’s products.  The successful candidate will develop advanced strategies to identify potentially unusual transactional activity and behaviors and will conduct research on trends and patterns that may enhance detections processes and investigations. This role requires the ability to build relationships across all levels of the organization to become an expert in PayPal’s product functionality and data environment to best partner with rule developers to execute against the GFC Analytics roadmap. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Development of transaction monitoring rule typologies leveraging AML expertise and PayPal product knowledge 
  • Participation in new product approval discussions and documentation to ensure awareness of new capabilities and to prioritize coverage within the existing Analytics roadmap
  • Partner with global and regional policy leaders to stay current on trends and typologies, developing a consistent feedback loop between the policy and investigative functions
  • Provide credible challenge and ongoing partnership when receiving and evaluating requests for new monitoring typologies or rule enhancements
  • Review documentation of rule coverage by product type to drive visibility into program coverage and potential enhancements
  • Engagement in rule optimization processes, including reviewing  assessments of whether rules are appropriately delivering high quality cases to compliance investigators
  • Provide expertise in evaluating transaction monitoring program coverage and integration strategies for recently acquired companies
  • Present new typologies or proposals to modify current transaction monitoring rules to GFC leaders
  • Guide the implementation of new transaction monitoring rules, helping to map data points required and ensure rule parameters are operating as designed


  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years’ experience in AML or Financial Crimes related role 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, in dealing with people at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to review and understand large datasets to identify trends and patterns
  • Intellectual curiosity and eagerness to continuously expand subject matter expertise
  • Ability to take initiative and execute against key initiatives
  • Ability to thrive in a cross-functional environment while juggling multiple responsibilities
  • Basic knowledge of relational databases is a plus
  • SQL skills using tools like Teradata, MS SQL, MySQL is a plus
  • Experience in distilling and presenting complex quantitative analysis to business users
  • High energy and a desire to work in a results-oriented, fast growth environment
