We are looking for a high performance professional to develop and lead the execution of PayPal’s Risk strategy within the Next Generation Commerce portfolio. This portfolio is comprised of the leading edge payments experiences being developed and released by PayPal, including but not limited to; mobile, 3rd party app, in-store, & offline payments, as well as highly customized experiences developed for a handful of the company’s most strategic partnerships. Experience in Indian market financial services/payments and Risk is a strong plus but not absolutely required. Enthusiasm about problem solving within a fast-paced developing vertical and driving pilot solutions to scale is a must.

PayPal’s Next Generation Commerce Consumer Risk team is responsible for assessing and managing the various buyer-side risk exposures PayPal takes on (including identity fraud, stolen financial, account takeover, credit) as well as developing and implementing the policies, treatments, and experiences related to the management of those exposures. The team is also responsible for partnering with the corresponding Business Unit in an ongoing effort to understand, align with, and influence their strategic priorities; to educate those business partners about core elements of Risk management and to continually look for ways to optimize the Risk treatments or customize Risk experiences towards the expectations of their portfolio.

The position will be responsible for both day to day execution and long term strategic planning of Risk initiatives against related to the India domestic and Latin America portfolios and manage a team of 3+ Risk Analysts.

The Manager will oversee the following areas:

  • Development, management, and maintenance of Risk strategy for controlling our primary manifestations of Consumer Risk (e.g., Stolen Financials, Account Takeover, Identity Fraud) within the Next Gen portfolio.
  • Consumer Loss performance in the portfolio including tradeoffs between loss minimization, enablement of business growth, and user experience.
  • Partnership with the corresponding BU and Product organizations to ensure priorities and deliverables are aligned along with ongoing educating and evangelizing of Risk capabilities.
  • Shared development, management, and maintenance of Next Gen Risk data infrastructures that will be key to the efficacy of the Next Gen Risk strategies and eventually scale across PayPal’s core payments portfolios.

The Manager’s day-to-day responsibilities will include

  • Management, guidance, and development of 3+ Risk Analysts
  • Identifying (via research, analysis, brainstorming) vulnerabilities / gaps / opportunities within the current portfolio of PayPal’s Consumer Risk controls
  • Building and delivering a business case for opportunities identified – sizing the benefit of the enablement initiative or the magnitude of the potential loss exposure
  • Formulating a strategy to ensure the optimal balance between user experience, business enablement, and loss exposure related to the planned innovations / improvements
  • Advocating with Risk and Business Unit leadership to gain agreement around the business case and allocate resources to the proposed approach for capturing the benefit
  • Partnering with other groups within and outside Risk to implement and deploy the new solution/policy/decision strategy/experience 

This individual’s key performance KPIs will include Loss Performance, Risk Declines, Decision Accuracy, Risk Data Availability.

Job Requirements

  • Strong strategic planning and organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills – a sense of appropriate communication approach to use given context/circumstances.  Experience working with cross-functional, geographically distributed teams, managing by influence.  Ability to contribute to strategic discussions and represent Risk in cross-functional meetings
  • Passion for leading and developing direct reports; providing guidance, consultation, and opportunities towards improving their professional skill set. 
  • Ability to get up to speed on a new content area very quickly and build awareness of current Risk and industry best practices – PayPal is constantly innovating by introducing new products and going after new and developing markets. 
  • Strong analytical skills: ability to build quick estimates using back-of-the-envelope analysis, structure (and, if needed, execute) more complex analyses, pull together business cases, navigate multi-dimensional sets of tradeoffs. Experience with SAS, R, or other stats based software is a plus.
  • Solid time management skills with ability to manage a large, diverse set of to-do’s – vigorously prioritize, stay on top of multiple workstreams, monitor progress, hold owners accountable. Experience with Program, Project, or Product management is a plus.
  • Comfort with data – ability to manipulate it, interpret it, question its validity, and develop recommendations based on it. Experience with SQL or other relational database language is a plus.
  • “Can do” attitude, team player, energetic personality, ability to work well under pressure in a fast paced ever changing environment.  Desire to continue to learn and grow professionally in a performance based environment.
  • Experience formulating fact-based strategies and driving their execution.  Experience in a strategy / consulting role is welcome.
  • Risk / Financial Services experience is desirable but not required – skills/intrinsic abilities outlined above are most important

Basic Qualifications

  • Strong communication, collaboration, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong root cause problem solving skills
  • 8+ years experience performing analytics and/or business portfolio management.
  • Proficiency in working with Excel and other Microsoft Office products
  • BS/BA in a relevant discipline
  • Ability to travel up to 2 weeks per quarter
