PayPal’s Data Finance Transformation team owns the data and web platform that powers Companywide short and long term analytics, predictive forecasting and reporting processes. The transformation team partners with Risk Management, Payment Platform, Finance and Data Technology teams to build state of the art back-end and front-end data and analytics systems that deliver capabilities for undertaking business performance analysis, automated trend deviation alerts, assessment of scenario based financial outcomes of business investments and organization’s financial performance. The Senior Data Engineer will perform in a senior development and project execution capacity for strategic transformation programs & initiatives, strategic engineering architecture design, resource allocation, and platform performance monitoring/improvements. The nature of the role is strategic, analytical and highly collaborative, and requires understanding of technology and business simultaneously, while working with team members across world and as a liaison for Global projects.


  • Lead, develop, and grow a high-performing, multi-function team of talented and passionate professionals, who are results driven to take the business forward and demonstrate superior leadership in line with the PayPal values.
  • Lead and drive requirement gathering sessions, identify requirement gaps and effectively negotiate with multiple stakeholders.
  • Provide technical leadership and contribute to the definition, development, integration, test, documentation, and support across multiple platforms (Unix, Python, Hadoop, SAP, Teradata)
  • Highly detailed with a systematic approach, sense of responsibility and strong, positive customer focus.  Must be results focused and highly energetic to drive the defined team and organizational goals
  • Establish a consistent, project management framework and development processes to deliver high quality software, in rapid iterations, for business partners in multiple geographies
  • Manage a team that designs, develops, troubleshoots and debugs software programs for databases, applications, tools, networks etc.
  • Must have demonstrably strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal), to include speaking clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations
  • Effectively lead teams by providing appropriate direction and developmental feedback, conducting annual reviews and participating in compensation decisions
  • Eat, sleep, and breathe services. Experienced in balancing production platform stability, feature delivery, and retirement of technical debt across a broad landscape of technologies.


  • 5+ years of software development experience.
  • Engineering education at Bachelor’s or Master’s level.
  • 4+ years of post-college working experience as a Senior developer.
  • 4+ years of SQL experience is required.
  • 4+ years of experience in data engineering and data analytics required
  • 4+ years of experience in at least one of the technologies such as Hadoop, Oracle, Informatica/ETL is required
  • Experience in MDM and Data Management/Governance would be a value add.
  • Experienced working in waterfall and agile frameworks in small and large engagements.
  • Strong conceptual, analytical and creative problem-solving skills; ability to work with considerable ambiguity; ability to learn new and complex concepts quickly.
  • A great communicator, strong project management skills, and superb attention to details.
  • Person who can communicate equally well with technologists and business or functional stakeholders.
  • Experience leading teams in a global complex matrix organization involving multiple reporting lines.
