Job Description

Fueled by a fundamental belief that having access to financial services creates opportunity, PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL) is committed to democratizing financial services and empowering people and businesses to join and thrive in the global economy. Our open digital payments platform gives PayPal’s 254 million active account holders the confidence to connect and transact in new and powerful ways, whether they are online, on a mobile device, in an app, or in person. Through a combination of technological innovation and strategic partnerships, PayPal creates better ways to manage and move money, and offers choice and flexibility when sending payments, paying or getting paid. Available in more than 200 markets around the world, the PayPal platform, including Braintree, Venmo and Xoom enables consumers and merchants to receive money in more than 100 currencies, withdraw funds in 56 currencies and hold balances in their PayPal accounts in 25 currencies.

The European headquarters of the PayPal group is a credit institution in Luxembourg, supervised by the Commission de Surveilance du Secteur Financier. The legal team is looking for a fast-learning, dynamic lawyer to join its growing team.

A typical day for the Legal Counsel will include:

  • Interacting with the Supervisory Board and Authorised Management and assisting the Company Secretary on corporate governance matters
  • Advising on a range of regulatory matters, including payments, banking, anti-money laundering, outsourcing and consumer protection
  • Managing the contract administration and legal assistant team (2 direct reports)
  • Contributing to ensuring the Luxembourg legal team works efficiently, including budget, reporting and outside counsel management
  • Supporting the Head of Legal, EMEA, on European legal team initiatives on an ad hoc basis

About You

  • You are admitted as a lawyer, with at least a minimum of three years’ post-admission experience in a law firm or as in-house counsel
  • You have experience in banking, payments, financial services or fintech; experience in Luxembourg regulation would be an advantage
  • You have ability to take ownership of matters, knowing when to take decisions and when to escalate
  • You have ability to thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • You are a creative problem solver who remains calm under pressure and who can effectively prioritise
  • You are a highly resourceful team player, working with people around the world
  • You are organized, with a keen attention for detail
  • You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills: perfect English is a necessity, French an advantage, and any other European language useful

We're a purpose-driven company whose beliefs are the foundation for how we conduct business every day. We hold ourselves to our One Team Behaviors which demand that we hold the highest ethical standards, to empower an open and diverse workplace, and strive to treat everyone who is touched by our business with dignity and respect. Our employees challenge the status quo, ask questions, and find solutions. We want to break down barriers to financial empowerment. Join us as we change the way the world defines financial freedom.
