Helping to manage the litigation caseload in Europe, Middle East and Africa with a focus on German and French speaking countries, either independently or with support of outside counsel.

A typical day for the Legal Counsel, EMEA Litigation will include:

  • Protecting and defending PayPal’s interests by ensuring that our litigation strategies and arguments in the region are aligned and optimized to achieve the best outcome.
  • Supervising and directing outside counsel on multiple litigation matters.
  • Reviewing and revising written submissions in multiple languages.
  • Working with internal stakeholders (for example, Customer Support, Risk, Compliance, Finance, Tax, Privacy, the broader EMEA and Global Legal Team) to ensure a proper investigation into the factual, legal and regulatory background of each case.
  • Developing creative approaches to managing legal risk and resolving disputes.
  • Advising on pre-litigation disputes.
  • Handling of IP warning letters and information requests.
  • Recommending and driving process improvements.
  • Maintaining and updating information and records regarding EMEA litigation matters to ensure accurate reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborating with legal and business colleagues worldwide and providing feedback on litigation matters to internal stakeholders to assist in the further development of policies and practices to mitigate legal risks facing the company.
  • Helping to effectively manage legal budget and cost controls.
  • Enjoying autonomy, visibility and support by reporting directly to the Head of EMEA Litigation.

About You:  

  • Fully qualified lawyer in Germany and/or France, qualifications in both jurisdictions a strong plus.
  • Law degree with strong academic record.
  • Up to 4 years of experience as a lawyer or in-house counsel in an international environment.
  • Fluent written and spoken English, German and French, additional languages are a plus.
  • A strong solution-oriented focus and an aptitude for working effectively on cross-functional teams and projects.
  • An intelligent and enthusiastic candidate content to work both autonomously and within a team.
  • Ability to apply the law to novel situations and to demonstrate the ability to find pragmatic and creative solutions to business and legal issues.
  • A great communicator who is able to explain complex legal concepts and requirements to a range of different stakeholders and personalities.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. 
  • Strong problem solving skills and superb attention to detail.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and a fast-paced culture.
  • A great sense of humor.
  • Enthusiasm to work in a truly international environment.

You Might Also Have:  

  • Legal and/or Litigation experience in the ecommerce, banking, or payments industries is a plus.
