PayPal is seeking an experienced lawyer to join the legal team supporting the Hyperwallet and Braintree businesses in the UK and Europe.  The person will advise on commercial and regulatory payment matters and work with key stakeholders in the business to support the Hyperwallet, Braintree and PayPal business in commercial contracts, marketplace offerings and general financial payment regulatory matters. This position is based in London and report to the Head of Legal UK.

Primary Job Responsibilities

Working collaboratively as a member of the PayPal Legal team, the Legal Counsel will be responsible for:

  • advising on UK and European laws and regulations impacting financial services, IT, consumer protection and data privacy with a focus on payment regulations;
  • daily interaction with sales and marketing teams, customers and financial institution partners in negotiating contract terms for the services offered by Hyperwallet and Braintree and advising on appropriate risk mitigation provisions as required;
  • advising the Hyperwallet and Braintree product teams on legal and regulatory issues impacting the development and launch of new products and services in the UK and Europe including adherence to customer and partner requirements and to risk management frameworks;
  • partnering with the risk and compliance teams supporting the Hyperwallet and Braintree businesses in UK and Europe including advice on applicable anti-money laundering and financial crime prevention requirements;
  • monitoring ongoing legislative and regulatory changes and advising on the implementation of policies and procedures to address new requirements including the provision of training on relevant topics to colleagues and the creation of new templates, policies and procedures; and
  • Supporting senior colleagues in the PayPal legal team on a variety of commercial opportunities, regulatory issues, strategic projects and legal department operational matters.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience and expertise in UK and European e-money and payment services laws and regulations.
  • Clear and concise communication skills (both spoken and written) with a strong ability to understand, analyze and explain complex legal concepts in a simple and straightforward manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work flexibly and collaboratively with international cross-functional teams as well as experience advising senior management and key stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks or projects simultaneously in a fast paced and dynamic environment.
  • A commercially focused and execution mindset with the ability to focus on desired results, clarifying next steps, and effective prioritization to meet deadlines, address risks and achieve desired results.

Preferred Qualifications

  • min. 3+ years post-qualification experience gained with a major law firm and/or in-house experience gained in the Payments or Financial Services industry.  
  • Experience in e-commerce, consumer protection and data privacy would be advantageous.
  • LLB or JD and admitted to practice law within the United Kingdom.
