We leverage data driven insights extensively in the Risk Management domain and are setting up an Global Analytics Centre of Excellence in Dublin to support global and regional analytics needs across the Commercial Risk Management function. Within this analytics team we are creating a position to leverage macroeconomic and economic intelligence and insights into our overall risk profiles. The Global Commercial Seller Risk team is responsible globally for the end to end management of seller risk for Large sellers. These sellers process > $500 000 in payments per year with PayPal and comprise ~ 60% of our global processing volume. Understanding and closely managing the credit (insolvency) risks associated with these sellers is critical to our management of the portfolio. The credit risk arises as PayPal offers a type of guarantee to buyers for undelivered goods and services and if the seller becomes insolvent, PayPal bears the financial liability.

PayPal seeks a business-savvy, data-driven Economic Intelligence and Global Macroeconomic Insights Specialist. The core responsibility of this person would be to provide a short, medium and long term global economic outlook and break that down further into regional, country and industry outlooks. This newly created position will provide dedicated monitoring of key macroeconomic developments, and translate the impact of economic indicators to PayPal, specifically in the seller risk management domain.  The objective is to identify and monitor new and existing economic threats and indicators to assist PayPal in managing these risks against PayPal’s portfolio of global sellers and support the appropriate risk/exposure/reward trade offs.  The position is expected to cultivate an additional holistic layer to Commercial Seller Risk Management across our global sphere of sellers whom we have credit financial exposure to.   

Responsibilities include:

  • Identification and monitoring of specific macro-economic levers relevant to the seller portfolio. 
  • Formulation of specific customised market/regional (NA, APAC, EMEA) strategies against key economic triggers   
  • Utilisation of external sources to support the monitoring of the key external levers and to assist in policy development, analytics creation and solution deployment  
  • Development of specific stress testing capabilities around relevant key indicators and management of these risks against PayPal portfolio.      
  • Develop a framework to connect economic indicators with PayPal’s business and risk performance indicators.
  • Deliver portfolio management and ‘hot spot’ reporting and monitoring. 
  • Assist in discovery of new opportunities to grow and optimize business and risk/reward trade off’s through external economical insights. 
  • Support global and regional strategic initiatives across the Commercial risk portfolio
  • Deep dive analyses on moderately sized data using SQL/SAS or other tools and structuring of analyses using MS Excel.
  • Use analytics and economic triggers to improve our ability to detect, understand and address emerging trends across portfolio and implement these changes. 
  • Share insights and have comfort in being able to present to a wide array of stakeholders.

Job Requirements

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s/(PHD) Degree in an Economics, engineering, quantitative or a Business related discipline.
  • 6 years + of related credit risk or business/economics experience.
  • Deep knowledge of the key macro economic trends and their threats to commerce.    
  • Familiarity with, and experience of, using MS Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with the concepts of counterparty risk is advantageous (not essential)
  • Experience with database querying tools like SQL, visualization tools like Tableau/QlikView, and scripting tools like Python will be a huge plus (but not essential)
