Our team’s passion: create a seamless, holistic and exceptional customer experience for all of PayPal’s customers. We do this by diving deep on design challenges at scale, and we partner with our product design and engineering teams to promote reuse and efficiencies of scale. Our global PayPal-wide design system includes design principles, visual styles, guidelines, interaction patterns, asset libraries and code. The lead product designer will help drive the evolution of our current global product design system, a role that is central to the articulation of our brand around the world. In addition, to extending our existing design language, you will also help drive the evolution of our design system into the future. This is also an opportunity to be a thought leader across the business to infuse our design system into every customer touch point. By combining your strategic vision, strong customer insights and creativity, you’ll help to invent world-class patterns and lead creative explorations that push PayPal forward.


  • You will define the core elements and compelling UX vision of the PayPal design language and component library. You specify core UX, visual, interaction and motion elements, create prototypes, document usage guidelines and create libraries for design teams to use.
  • You will provide community outreach to cultivate internal knowledge around the design system and its multiple applications by coaching contributing teams who are exploring new additions to the design system.
  • You will use facilitative leadership skills to drive to the best outcome for stakeholders, resulting in others learning from you and inspiring others to want to work with you.
  • You will uncover unmet needs for the Design System from customers, our product design teams and engineering stakeholders and identify opportunities to make it more powerful and usable.

About you:

  • A systems thinker, connecting and making relationships across multiple teams and experiences.
  • You have experience with design languages and human interface guidelines. You are familiar with frameworks, components and patterns -- ideally as both a designer, customer and system creator.
  • You are extremely comfortable with ambiguity and love solving ambitious problems in a generative and iterative approach.
  • You have the mindset and methodologies to understand internal and external customers. You delight first and foremost in serving their needs effectively.
  • You are a detailed conscious designer with strong knowledge of both interaction and visual design.
  • You bring excellence in written and verbal communication to align teams and stakeholder to contribute meaningful material to the design system.


  • 10+ years experience.
  • Bachelors or Master’s Degree in the study of design including one of the following; Design, Information Architecture, Human Factors or equivalent project/portfolio experience.
  • Deep knowledge of design principles and methods, innovation and ideation tools.
  • Master of the UX lifecycle with deep, direct experience in most skill areas and tools.
  • Customer-focused, with experience using design research methods to uncover customer insights. 
  • Excellent project management, communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience leading cross-team efforts and synthesizing feedback and input from product management, engineering and design.
  • Thorough knowledge of essential channels and platforms with experience in mobile, dedicated, web and native solution design.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.
