The PayPal Merchant Technical Engineer 3 serves as a technical expert of PayPal's products and services and is able to identify, analyze and resolve software related bugs. The Technical Engineer is responsible for providing technical expertise to merchants, developers and internal PayPal teams through the development lifecycle. Leadership and adaptability are a key component to this position as it will require building strong relationships across the organization and being able to take the lead as the technical expert.


• Installation and setup of payment interfaces, APIs, and commerce products, while working directly with developers, merchant and internal teams on post integration issues to provide technical support, consulting and best practices.

• Identify, troubleshoot and run test scenarios for technical issues with code, software, hardware, devices and  endpoints.

• Communicate issues to PayPal merchants and to other PayPal departments.

• Identifies, verify and documents irregularities in functionality, including posting appropriate unexpected behaviors.

• Manage bug remediate processes. 

• Generates and reviews in-depth technical information (Sample code, white papers, FAQs, Snippets) for distribution to PayPal merchants.

• Create and run demos of PayPal commerce functionality.

• Participates in the development of tools, systems and processes to improve product supportability.

• Ability to diagnose and identify issues with API’s, Code, Services, and Network connectivity. 

• Conducts new feature or subsystem projects as needed.

• Influence senior management on product direction, particularly related to their area of focus and expertise.

• Provides leadership to others and may coordinate activities, particularly junior engineers who work on the same team or related features or product sub-systems

• On call rotation responsibilities.

Technical Competencies:

• Experience with Software Application Debugging and troubleshooting

• Experienced web developer in two or more of the following required:  Java, C, C++, C#, VB.NET, PHP, ColdFusion, Perl, Ruby, Python.

• Experience with HTML and JavaScript 

• Experience with NVP, JSON, XML

• Experience with Web Services, SOAP, REST

• Experience with Linux/Unix command line interface

• Experience with Supporting high-availability applications

• Understanding of basic SQL Commands

• Understanding of Firewalls, proxy, HTTP Errors, server side errors, TCP/IP


• BS, BSEE, CS or other relevant technical degree required.

• Experience with Software Application Debugging and troubleshooting
