The Commercial Underwriting Analyst will be responsible for providing detailed credit analysis with emphasis on merchant level risk and financial statement analysis, assessment of total risk exposure and validation of merchant's business proposition. The Commercial Underwriting Analyst will be involved in monitoring merchant accounts for indications of increased risk, and perform in-depth analysis on accounts requiring further investigation.

The underwriting process includes the use of PayPal data, external credit reports, websites review, collaboration with stakeholders and interviews with merchants. Areas of focus will include but are not limited to performing risk management analysis and providing acquisition recommendations, assuring regulatory adherence, enforcement operation and validation of merchant’s business proposition. Success will be measured by the ability to enable the merchant services business by optimizing revenue and losses.

The Commercial Analyst Underwriting will also produce and derive requested internal and external data and analysis to ensure that the group has the appropriate information to enable strong risk decisions and recommendations as necessary by business type and industry sectors. Furthermore she/he will support risk initiatives and enhancements to the merchant risk technology platform and infrastructure to support multiple global business units.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong array of skills including project management, risk management, credit analysis and communications expertise.

Core Duties:

  • Analyse Merchant requests for a PayPal Business account, performing a Credit Risk assessment of the merchant and/or company against established Corporate Credit Risk policies and procedures, including: Financial statement analysis and Merchant business model analysis
  • Proactive Review of top tier merchants with responsibility for loss mitigation, reviews of high risk and high exposure accounts as per approval matrix and responsibility for maintaining and updating the PR database including conducting full assessments of large volume and/or high risk accounts incl. EAM accounts including PayPal Acceptable Use Policy, Federal and State Regulatory Compliance, Credit Card Compliance, Legal, Fraud and Credit Risk.
  • Act as High Risk Desk point of escalation for high risk vertical risk approval (Airlines, Gambling) and countersigning on risk approval exposures as per the delegated authority matrix.
  • Act as a point of contact for all Credit Risk queries, managing and providing ongoing training to Business Units, Sales Teams analysts and other areas of the business maintaining positive relationships and open communication with all departments in the Sales workflow process, supporting business and revenue growth.
  • Proactive Review of top tier merchants with responsibility for loss mitigation, reviews of high risk and high exposure accounts as per approval matrix and responsibility for maintaining and updating the PR database including conducting full assessments of large volume and/or high risk accounts incl. EAM accounts including PayPal Acceptable Use Policy, Federal and State Regulatory
  • Provide feedback and input to management, Risk policy and Global Ops on processes and problems with the aim of providing solutions and improvements to the processes and policies including reports from external industry specific data and financial sources to enable close monitoring of high risk large merchants (30%)
  • Assist in projects to develop recommendations for policy, protocols, risk mitigation strategy, merchant trust and safety tools.
  • Communicate with a wide range of PayPal teams globally, merchants and vendors during credit exposure review process in a professional manner.

Education and Skills

Experience 2+ years

Experience in financial statement analysis, financial modelling and valuation is essential

Experience preparing financial reviews, interpreting financial performance and assessing credit exposure is essential

Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent
