This role is based in Sydney, Australia and leads the legal team supporting the Australian business and its board of directors. The role has a dual reporting line into the Australian CEO and the VP of International, Legal.

This position is responsible for:

  • managing the Australian legal and company secretary function, providing  strategic legal and regulatory advice relating to commercial contracting, payments licensing, banking and credit, anti- money laundering  and counter terrorist financing, data protection and privacy, information security,  competition law, consumer protection, outsourcing, risk management and corporate governance;  
  • engaging with relevant regulators, including APRA, ASIC, AUSTRAC and RBA, and helping define and drive regulatory strategy;
  • advising the Australian business, CEO, leadership team, Board of Directors, and PayPal’s global business on Australian issues where required, including engaging closely and collaboratively with the Risk, Compliance and Government Relations functions on a variety of legal and regulatory issues;
  • advising on a range of commercial contracts and transactions, corporate and business development initiatives, disputes and litigation, corporate governance and company secretary matters, sales and marketing communications and product offerings;
  • leading through organizational change and effective stakeholder collaboration;
  • leading and managing the legal team in Australia (currently comprising 4 lawyers and job share paralegals) and attract, develop and retain talent in the legal function;
  • partner with key business leaders and global legal colleagues to ensure end to end global perspective are heard;
  • create and foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

Requirements of the role:

  • Candidates should have a minimum of 12 years post qualification experience and be from an established In House Legal team or established Private Practice Law firm with relevant financial services expertise.
  • Preference for candidates with solid experience and expertise in Australian financial services law, regulation and law reform relating to payments, banking and credit, including a sound knowledge of AML/CTF regulation.
  • We would consider candidates with solid and broad legal and regulatory experience and expertise in financial services including payments, consumer and retail banking, consumer credit and finance. Experience working in or with legal teams in other jurisdictions preferred.
  • Broad and solid experience in dealing with regulators in Australia with substantial experience and expertise in regulatory advocacy (both written and oral).
  • Board experience in advising our board of directors (including independent directors) and senior regional and local business management teams.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on leadership, team management, teamwork and ability to foster/manage relationships across multiple departments
  • Extremely proactive with a strong bias for action
  • Skilled in focusing on desired results, clarifying next steps, and ability to prioritise effectively to meet deadlines, address risk and achieve desired results
  • Minimum 12 years of post-qualification experience
  • Law Degree and Admission to practice law in Australia required
