We are seeking an experienced engineering director to lead a talented geographically distributed engineering team to build a world class end to end AI platform which will democratize AI/ML for everyone at PayPal and enable intelligent decision making in everything we do. The ideal candidate is customer-centric, strategic & analytical in decision making and laser-focused on executing at scale. You are passionate about building platforms at scale, cutting-edge technology, innovation, winning in the market and delivering on their commitments. You should have the technical expertise and working experience in AI/ML to lead technical and data science discussions and guide cross-functional teams through functional definition, solution, and integration on large scale. You have a proven track record of leading, coaching and mentoring their teams to reach their highest potential.

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead and inspire a high-performing engineering team to build and scale a highly secure, reliable and performant AI platform to enable a standardized end to end model development lifecycle with delightful user experience 
  • Drive a results-oriented culture with a strong focus on engineering excellence, execution, and craftmanship as a Customer Champion
  • Develop trusted partnership with business, product, data scientists and architecture leaders to drive optimized platform product delivery; Manage stakeholder planning and communications ensuring key outcomes
  • Recruit, coach, and mentor the best engineering and management talent
  • Ability to lead complex technical and data science discussions and engagements that involve multiple personas including data scientists, data engineers, analysts and developers 
  • Anticipate and aggressively remove obstacles that slow down or prevent products and programs from delivering on product and program objectives. Balance urgent and effective action, commitment to excellence, and taking initiative to resolve problems; holds internal stakeholders accountable where appropriate
  • Strong communication, listening, interpersonal, influencing, and negotiation skills; able to convey important messages in a clear and compelling manner
  • Develops loyalty and commitment in others by communicating clear expectations, developing and mentoring direct reports, and setting an example in one’s own behavior

Personal Qualities, Knowledge, Experience and Skills Required

  • Solid track record of over-achieving engineering and platform delivery and scaling targets in high volume, innovative and fast-paced high-pressure environment; proven results in delivery on platform product
  • Global mindset with ability to think about culture, language, and other aspects when putting the customer at the center of all outcomes 
  • Working experience in data & analytics field, including new and emerging technologies in Machine Learning/Deep Learning, AI, and big data 
  • Working experience with Agile methodologies and durable team concepts 
  • 15+ years’ experience as an Engineering Manager with 5+ years direct senior leadership experience
  • Ability to influence at all levels of the organization and across multiple domains
  • Strong strategic planning and organizational skills; ability to build and lead a team across geographically distributed locations 
  • Passion for leading and developing direct reports; providing guidance, consultation, and opportunities towards improving their professional skill set
  • Excellent time management skills with ability to manage a large, diverse set of to-do’s – vigorously prioritize, stay on top of multiple work streams, monitor progress, hold owners accountable
  • Communication style motivated by brevity and purposeful outcomes with experience interfacing with executives
