We are looking for decision scientist to develop PayPal’s Risk strategy within the Next-Generation Platforms & Strategic Partners portfolio. This portfolio is comprised of PayPal’s newest leading-edge payments solutions (including new form factors, in-store payments, and payment tokens), as well as customized experiences developed for the company’s highest-priority strategic partnerships. Decision scientists are highly motivated team players with self-learning ability who specialize in creating, driving and executing initiatives to mitigate fraud patterns while improving customer experience. The day-to-day job involves identifying fraud patterns based on analysis of large data sets, creating mitigation's to prevent fraud on PayPal’s platform, and adapting advanced proprietary fraud prevention mechanisms to enable PayPal’s growth. The decision scientists work with a wide variety of partners in the company such as product experts, developers, data scientists and engineers to bring their analytical insights to life. The ideal candidates are former management consultants or data analysts with 3-6 of years of relevant experience, execution-focused problem solvers equipped with strong analytical and communication skills. Decision scientists will be required to drive solutions from start to finish, have a strong sense of accountability coupled with passion for a great customer experience.

PayPal’s Next-Generation Platforms Consumer Risk team is responsible for assessing and managing buyer-side financial risk exposures for of the company’s newest leading-edge payments solutions, including new form factors, in-store payments, and payment tokens. The team is also responsible for partnering with the corresponding Product, Sales, Marketing, Data Science, and Operations teams to align on strategic priorities and collaboratively optimize Risk capabilities, treatments, and experiences.   • Own Risk KPIs and deliver decision strategies
    • Develop data-driven decision strategies to support the business’s global financial goals, monitor impact and adjust in response to the dynamic ecosystem in which we operate
    • Leverage PayPal’s large datasets to optimize performance and minimize financial loss while enabling good customer experience for legitimate users
  • Drive End-to-End processes with partners across many organizations
    • Plan and execute long-term projects from start to finish
    • Influence, align and drive feature development and process execution with partners across the company
  • Create and innovate risk controls and capabilities to manage PayPal’s next-generation platforms
    • Brainstorm innovative new controls, features and data for risk management, align with stakeholders and implement these platform capabilities
    • Discover how to use and analyze new capabilities and data, and disseminate best practices and policies across Risk and Paypal for enterprise-wide global impact
  • Support Product and Business Organizations
    • Guide the development of customer-facing products to enhance the PayPal experience around the world
    • Work to improve user experience in PayPal’s offerings through enabling risk controls, data collection and usage
    • Lead as the Risk point of contact for your portfolio for new product launches and with pilot merchants and key partners; represent Risk’s point of view and ensure launches include Risk capabilities that align with best practices, communicate risk decisions and performance, evaluate the business impact of proposals from both product and customer-facing organizations

Job Requirements:

  • Strong analytical skills – ability to structure and execute complex analyses, pull together business cases and forecasts to navigate through multi-dimensional sets of tradeoffs, and make quick estimates using back-of-the-envelope analysis and mental arithmetic.
  • Enthusiasm and proven track record for data-driven problem solving and execution within a fast-paced environment; experience with experimental design and analysis preferred.
  • Working knowledge of SQL or other relational database language, experience with Microsoft Excel or statistical software, and hands-on experience in data analysis involving large data sets; SAS/Hadoop experience is a nice-to-have
  • Familiarity with the technology or payments industry, or demonstrated experience in systems thinking. Within the Next-Gen Risk team, problem diagnosis and treatment design must consider multiple systems and domains, so structured big-picture thinking in frameworks coupled with a detail-oriented bias is required to successfully provide thought leadership.
  • Excellent written communication skills to convey quantitative findings to a diverse audience via email and PowerPoint, provide program updates to stakeholders and coordinate with cross-functionally and cross-culturally across multiple departments and geographies.
  • Polished verbal communication and presentation skills – risk decision scientists need to collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, data scientists, business owners, and customers to diagnose problems and discover solutions, present findings in a clear and concise manner to senior stakeholders, and influence and negotiate to reach alignment on how to execute risk strategies.
  • “Can-do” attitude, team player, energetic personality, ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment to meet deadlines. The successful risk decision scientist is and execution-focused a self-starter who has the resilience to learn from their mistakes and reach their true potential.
  • An innate intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to build awareness of current payments industry and risk management best practices. PayPal is constantly innovating by introducing new products and entering new markets, so successful decision scientists on this team must quickly get up speed on new content areas in order to provide thought leadership.
  • Quantitative BS/BA/BBA degree with 5 years of management consulting or relevant problem solving and analytics experience, or MBA/MS degree with 3 years of relevant experience
