PayPal Global Risk and Data Sciences San Jose Team is seeking a highly motivated Data Scientist to join the team. The candidate will obtain practical work experience in Big Data, learn about PayPal business, and receive mentorship from his/her manager and team. The ideal candidates are problem solvers, equipped with strong analytical, mathematical, and programming skills suited to approach various kinds of challenges in complex environments. Candidates must be quick learners with a strong sense of personal responsibility and a technical orientation.

  • Extract and analyze very large volume of data covering a wide range of information from user profile to transaction history.
  • Build state-of-the-art statistical procedures, algorithms and models to solve a range of problems in diverse domains including: Marketing & Sales, Customer Engagement, and Risk Detection.
  • Communicate project status accurately and in a timely manner. Ensure that projects adhere to established standards and methodology practices.
  • Facilitate problem solving and escalations to maintain schedule.
  • Proficient code writing capability in a major programming language such as Python, R, Java and C++. 
  • Proficient in model building and data mining.
  • Experience in statistical packages such as R is a plus.
  • Experience in data manipulation language such as SQL is a big plus.
  • Experience in Big Data such as MapReduce, PIG, or HIVE is a big plus.
  • Payment industry experience is a plus
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented, with a strong ability to coordinate and track multiple deliverables, tasks and dependencies.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks or projects at one time.
  • Familiarity with office productivity applications, such as Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently and proficiently. Accountable for own results, and is seen as clear subject matter expert within group / geography
  • Ability to identify typical problems and issues during normal course of work and take proactive actions to solve them with minimum guidance.
  • Recommends changes to policies and establishes procedures that affect immediate organization(s) in positive ways. 
  • Impact of decision often result in moderate to large reach
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills on a broad set of technical topics.
  • Presents effectively to peers.
  • Asks open-ended questions and contribute to brainstorming and design discussions.  Communicates effectively on general business issues
