PayPal is seeking a Country Manager for Hong Kong/Taiwan and Korea. Reporting directly to the North Asia VP, he/she will be responsible for identifying and developing new business opportunities for the 3 markets, and negotiating agreements with key external stakeholders including the local government officials or agencies, key business partners, etc. This senior executive will also be responsible for developing similar relationships with partners who help facilitate trading and consummate transactions between users including technology providers, financial institutions, etc with the objective of establishing PayPal as the leading online, mobile and offline payment service in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea, and maximizing market share and profitability.

Major Responsibilities

  • Define and implement the business strategy to drive and maximize growth within the Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea market and establish the company as the leading payment solution provider.
  • Responsible for the overall P&L of the business including establishing business and revenue goals and strategies in coordination with the North Asia VP and the BU management team.
  • Work with key regulatory bodies and external parties to ensure that the company obtains the necessary regulatory approvals and ensure that the business is in compliance with local laws and regulations.
  • Representing the company both internally and externally to communicate key business objectives, build partnerships and seek resources.
  • Partner with all eBay Inc. affiliates to cross/up-sell both on-eBay and off eBay user base, for merchandise as well as payment volume.
  • Working with colleagues across the APAC and global organization to ensure adequate resources are secured to achieve business goals.
  • Drive “operational excellence” by leveraging regional infrastructure to maximize efficiency and synergy of the organizations
  • Coordinating with counterparts globally to contribute to international initiatives and sharing best practices.
  • Leading and motivating a team of senior managers with diverse backgrounds, as well as knowing how to attract, recognize, and reward outstanding people.


The ideal candidate for the role of Country Head of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea must have a relevant track record of engaging senior-level executives in sustained business relationships – a proven rainmaker, business generator and closer who is able to develop relationships that lead to profitable business. In addition he / she must have:

  • High level strategic capability with insights to future influences on the business coupled with good analytical and decision making skills.
  • Appropriate industry knowledge of payments and eCommerce. Experience in M&A, business partnerships, risk management and regulatory requirements would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of at least two of the following areas: Financial Services, Banking, Payments, Retail & Online Commerce, Internet Portals, Social Networking, Social Gaming, Mobile.
  • Must have an excellent command of both verbal and written English.  Cantonese and / or Mandarin speaker and knowledge of the China market is highly desirable.
  • Must have an undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline and a MBA qualification from a highly regarded institution.

Ideal Experience

  • Proven and successful track record of business leadership: Fifteen or more years relevant business and leadership experience in a dynamic multi-cultural environment including 12 years plus experience in a p/l management capacity within a leading organization. A strong track record of growing profitable businesses that have achieved sustainable growth and have a strong client focus. Proven results in business development including being responsible for devising and implementing both the strategic vision and investment plan for the business and ensuring proper investment in resources (people, capital, technology) for the growth of the group. Outstanding leadership skills, having led teams with the ability to attract, engage and retain high quality staff. Core and scaled management and leadership with the drive to contribute directly to the business – not just preside over it.
  • Relationship Management: Demonstrable track record of targeting, initiating, developing, leading, retaining and enhancing client and partnership relationships in the markets of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea in addition to providing advice and guidance with regard to product development to facilitate new product ideas and value-added solutions. Ability to enhance their stature and credibility by building high quality, trusted and long lasting partnerships and relationships with key constituents, internal and external, including prospective and existing clients, regulators and stakeholders, through a strong existing network and relationship building skills. They will have outstanding personal credentials, reputation and professional credibility within the local markets and be an individual with unquestioned integrity and ethics.

  • Commercial Acumen: A successful candidate would be an entrepreneur who thrives on the challenge of driving a business. The success of the Country Head will be measured by revenues and new business won. This individual must be constantly initiating and building relationships while leveraging all of the resources within the company to support, enhance and drive the business.
