The Global Credit Risk, Seller Risk and Collections (GCSC) Risk Intelligence team requires a Business Intelligence Data Architect able to gather, understand, and implement business requirements through the design, development, and management of Operational Data Stores (ODS), Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), and Business Intelligence (BI) technologies. The day to day job involves partnering with analytic and business intelligence teams across Risk Intelligence to generate architectural requirements, architect and deploy interim data structures, and ensure production data teams prioritize and deliver long-term stable architectural solutions. In addition, this role serves as the foundational connection between data sources and business intelligence teams working to implement new or advance existing business intelligence solutions. This role is critical in ensuring we build and deliver scalable, flexible, and efficient back-end data structures to effectively support key Risk Intelligence reporting, monitoring, and analytic solutions across the GCSC team. The BI Data Architect will define the structure of each data store, define the data structure convention (relational, normalized, etc.), develop, coordinate, and communicate technical requirements to PayPal’s Global Data Services (GDS) team on behalf of the Risk Intelligence BI team. The BI Data architect will prototype and document the data model (ERD) and extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes which help produce effective business reports, dashboards, and KPIs that enable insightful data analyses. The BI Data architect partners heavily with PayPal’s GDS team to develop, manage, and update data models (physical & logical) and metadata definitions in appropriate domains: source systems, staging or ODS, data marts, and EDW.


  • Assist with creation of a robust, sustainable, and scalable Risk Intelligence BI architecture that supports requirements and provides for expansion
  • Work with end users, business analysts, technical architects, and developers to define the data requirements and data structure for BI solutions
  • Design and implement conceptual and logical models for the data warehouse or data mart (data structure, storage, and integration).  Lead the database analysis, design, and build efforts.
  • Evolves data models to meet new and changing business requirements and growth
  • Work with business analysts to identify and understand requirements and source data systems
  • Design data lineage and mapping of source system data to data warehouse models
  • Develop and test ETL processes
  • Define, capture and document metadata and rules associated with ETL processes
  • Ensure that the database designs fulfill the requirements, including data volume, frequency, and long term BI growth requirements
  • Work with other architects to ensure that all components work together to meet objectives and performance goals as defined in the requirements
  • Participate in validation, data quality management, and governance reviews
  • Is responsible for the implementation of approved technologies that align with technical design standards/architecture (for integrated process, applications, data and technology), business plans and long-term strategy.
  • Makes recommendations to improve operational processes relative to efficiency and effectiveness; provides input and organizational context to major architectural designs to ensure consistency, maintainability and flexibility with respect to overall system, technical and product architecture within a domain or portfolio.
  • Analyzes highly complex system and technical issues to implement technologies that align with strategic technical direction.
  • Delivers artifacts, technical alternative documents and architectural design that meet business requirements; oversees design reviews and frameworks.
  • Develops solutions to difficult technical problems encountered as part of system implementation, upgrades or support issues
  • Utilizes data-mining skills and business knowledge to convert raw data into solutions that provide clear and concise insights into the health of the business
  • Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with business partners and technology teams ensuring goals and customer satisfaction are achieved
  • Maintains a high attention to detail in order to ensure the data integrity of architected solutions


  • The position requires a Bachelor Degree with 5+ years’ experience in Information Technology or BI related fields with progressively increased levels of responsibility with data modeling expertise including a strong understanding of data sources, relational and dimensional modeling, effective uses of business data (validity, timeliness, and benefit)
  • Prior experience working with Consumer and SMB Lending or Credit Card Banking data domains highly preferred
  • Possesses ability to use effective facilitation skills to elicit requirements from a diverse range of stakeholders and groups
  • Ability to specify and document data warehouse and data mart requirements
  • Ability to provide critical architectural input including evaluating, proposing, and selecting appropriate design alternatives which meet functional requirements
  • Experience with connecting to and sourcing data from multiple disparate data sources including Teradata, SAP BW, Oracle, SQL, Hadoop and others
  • Experience in developing / architecting data supporting Credit/Risk products or portfolios is desired.
  • Strong experience with ETL tools such as SSIS and SAS, as well as familiarity with standard data extract, de-duping, cleansing, integration, and aggregation techniques and best practices
  • Experience in sourcing data from disparate systems with a good understanding of their Data Models and ETL procedures
  • Knowledge of formal database architecture and design
  • Possesses a strong aptitude/passion for creative problem solving when dealing with ambiguity
  • Strong project management skills with high attention to detail on data and a strong focus on meeting deliverables with time limitations - must have ability to multitask and prioritize
  • The ability to facilitate prototyping sessions with a variety of end users and stakeholders
  • Ability to listen to others and a passion for affecting change are important traits for this job
  • Must possess a strong technical background with relational and dimensional modeling skills Ability to manage projects end to end
  • Must have proven leadership skills supported by excellent analytical, communication, and presentation skills
