The Consumer In-Store and Digital Commerce team is looking for a Staff Architect to help design solutions and applications in service to PayPal’s vision of expanding its reach and being able to serve a billion daily active users. Realizing this ambitious goal forces this team to think about an omnichannel presence, enabling solutions that blur the traditional lines between digital and in-store payment experiences. The ideal candidate for this role needs to have relevant industry experience, technical competency in building scalable, low latency, resilient, modern software systems and most importantly being able to work with multiple stakeholders in designing the right solutions without falling prey to building for local optimums. The ideal candidate should have 10-15 years of relevant experience


  • Work with product managers and distill down the product requirements into system capabilities that need to be built or enhanced
  • Develop architecture artifacts that provide clarity to the product development teams for the impacted systems. Such artifacts include but is not limited to
    • High level design for a solution clearly articulating the interaction between impacted systems  
    • API and webhook contracts
    • Event and asynchronous message specifications
    • Database schema designs
  • Work with product development teams to assess the relative execution complexity while choosing between multiple solution alternatives
  • Engage with teams both internal and external to PayPal to arrive the at the right level encapsulation between the dependent systems  
  • Evangelize the in-store and digital commerce solutions to the broader PayPal architecture and product development teams

Required skills

  • Prior experience in building highly scalable, resilient, low latency systems capable of handling hundreds of millions of real time instructions and more than a billion offline messages per day
  • Authoritative knowledge in software design patterns and principles like SOLID, OOP, GOF and Microservices design patterns among others
  • Proficiency in developing Rest based API contracts based on Open API specifications
  • Proficiency in building Java based md-tier services
  • Working knowledge in C++ code for reading legacy code and system analysis
  • Proven track record in building mobile first solutions

Preferred skills

  • Prior knowledge payment tokenization and EMVCo specifications
  • Prior knowledge of Quick Response Code (QRC) or barcodes 
  • Prior knowledge of payment card industry
