PayPal’s advanced response team is a team comprised of senior engineers who are tasked with the detection, investigation and handling of critical security threats and incidents across all of PayPal’s and its subsidiaries’ digital and network environments.

A typical day for the Advanced Threat-Response Engineer will include:

  • Leading the technical incident response process for critical severity security incidents.
  • Developing and integrating investigation, forensics and analysis tools.
  • Help communicating severe incidents information across the Organization.
  • Conducting gap analysis on required tools and capabilities.
  • Performing threat-hunting exercises as part of a team of senior engineers.
  • Use advanced data analysis techniques and platforms to investigate huge security and system datasets.
  • Automating the repeated execution of useful detection and investigation processes.

  • You will lead to the quick and effective detection, containment, mitigation and remediation of high severity and critical security incidents and threats.
  • You will provide strategic oversight of security threat models and security controls.
  • You will detect and mitigate tech and security issues across PayPal’s network.

About You:

  • Extensive operational experience with multi-tier UNIX systems, IDS, firewall, databases, encryption, and log management/analysis infrastructure
  • Broad understanding of Internet infrastructure (TCP/IP, DNS, etc.)
  • Experience with digital investigations, being able to trace source and result of attack based on system, application, and/or network forensic evidence found, including via packet analysis
  • experience with various malware analysis techniques as well as innovation of malware detection
  • Extensive experience with data mining through multiple sources ranging from raw system/application/network logs to enterprise class databases
  • Advanced knowledge of threat landscape and threat intelligence methodologies
  • Recent programming experience of some sort (Python, SQL, R)
  • Ability to find common ground among differing points of view and lead group to a mutually acceptable solution
  • Demonstrated critical thinking capabilities, especially under pressure
  • Mentor junior team members in skills, experiences, and career growth
  • Gift of being able to convey extremely complicated technology topics to non-technology audience successfully
  • Passion for security incident response work and the complex process and technological infrastructure it requires
