The role of Strategic BD manager is to: • Help identify strategic opportunities that will have long term benefit to Merchant service business and overall China CBT business. • Lead high exposure strategic projects working with major Chinese Market Places; • Establishing relationships with local government, local business communities, any relevant partners (e.g. 3rd party payment companies), to develop potential leads for merchant services acquisitions;

Core responsibilities:

1. Strategy & Planning

  • Develop & drive longer term strategy for Merchant Services business development
  • Work in conjunction with Regional teams to develop actionable strategic initiatives and share best practice.
  • Track and measure impact of activities to show ROI

2. Brand Understanding & Preference

  • Synthesise the key drivers of PayPal brand preference, and implement them
  • Work with PR colleagues to ensure consistent message across all channels

2. Execution

  • Strong execution capability to help derive leads for Merchant Service Acquisition team to close  deals 
  • Results oriented

3. Relationship Building

  • Working with cross functional teams in Marketing, Risk, AUP, Product etc.
  • Build and maintain relationships with Regional MS and other teams
  • Maintain strong relationship with key partners for longer term benefits

5. General Management

  • Key member of merchant services Management team
  • Acting as China lead or representative on high profile global/APAC strategic partnership/merchants projects
  • Assisting with management of wider team including recruitment and people development

Person Specification

Experience required:

  • 12+ years working experience
  • At least 10 years of Business development  experience in Internet/Financial Services industry and a proven record
  • Native Chinese
  • Result-oriented, strong in relationship skills, and eager to beat the target yet maintains the highest level of integrity
  • Must be analytical, ideally has exposure in strategy formulation in Fortune 500 companies.
  • An independent, proactive and effective team member under pressure who understands team-working
  • Good communication skills in Chinese and English
  • Willing to travel extensively
  • Proficiency in creating and delivering compelling value propositions
  • Evidence of being a ‘brand champion’
  • Exceptional people management skills
  • Strong project management skills with experience with work prioritisation, planning, influencing and working in cross-functional teams
  • Financial services background is a bonus, but not essential
  • Understand the Chinese or global e-commerce environment is a plus
  • Understand payment industry is a plus

Technical skills:

  • Strong MS Office skills, particularly strength needed in PowerPoint and Excel
  • Knowledge of online marketing & CRM systems such as Mediaplex, Unica, Omniture or similar
  • Knowledge of HTML & Photoshop a plus
  • Experience with analytical tools such as Business Objects, MicroStrategy, SQL added bonus


  • Excellent academic background
  • Undergraduate degree from top school, MBA/MS  preferred
