As a Staff Software Engineer for PayPal Checkout Engineering you will provide technical leadership for your development team and you will be a full participant across all phases of our software development lifecycle: from system design, architecture, and planning to development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and beyond. You will be responsible for developing industry-leading Checkout experiences that bring unquestionable value to both merchants and buyers. In this role, you will be responsible for shaping the future of PayPal's customer-facing Checkout products, from payment buttons to transaction receipts, and every step along the way. Things you'll do as a Staff Software Engineer at PayPal:

  • Lead and contribute to engineering efforts and demonstrate ownership of features, projects, modules, and services

  • Contribute to the design and development of existing and new payment experiences using a wide variety of web technologies

  • Actively participate in our architectural decision-making process

  • Act as a strong participant and advocate for clean and scalable coding principles

  • Be a champion of high-performance, secure, and reliable software services

  • Identify critical non-functional requirements for the work your team is prioritizing (security, performance, scalability, etc.)

  • Provide technical leadership for your team with occasional advisement from senior teammates and management

  • Collaborate effectively with product, design, and analytics team members to better understand what our customers need, and why

  • Work with your Agile team to achieve shared understanding around the new products and features under consideration

  • Continuously learn and share your knowledge and experience with your peers, adjacent teams, and across the organization

  • Collaborate with other developers to design and implement the required solutions

  • Understand and apply our technical architecture to ensure consistent, reliable, and secure deployments

  • Enhance and maintain existing product capabilities

  • Participate in formal and informal code reviews to ensure code quality

  • Actively contribute to our automated test suite to enable speedy and reliable continuous integration

  • Assist with application deployments to our various cloud environments

  • Bring fresh ideas for how to continuously improve our software and your team

  • Advocate for ways to remediate technical debt on an ongoing basis


What we are looking for:

  • You have a Bachelors or Masters in Computer Science, a related field of study, or 5+ years of related professional experience

  • You are skilled in writing modern JavaScript or TypeScript across the stack, and you're very familiar with topics and technologies like React, GraphQL, and Node.js

  • You care about writing high-quality code, and you've written your fair share of automated tests to back up your code

  • You understand how different devices and form factors impact web applications and user experience

  • You're passionate about creating compelling user experiences

  • You're ultimately a problem solver, and you enjoy working both independently and collaboratively to identify the root cause of any issue

  • You have experience mentoring less seasoned team members

  • You're confident in collaborating with teammates in non-technical roles, such as marketing, finance, and legal


Preferred skills:

  • Expertise in client-side application development, with a focus on flawless user experiences and interaction design

  • Experience in payments processing or e-commerce domains

  • Experience working in a global-scale SaaS environment
