PayPal Commercial Underwriting is seeking a new analyst to join the team as a Special Credit Underwriter to join our team in Chandler Arizona. The Special Credit Underwriter will be responsible for monitoring under-performing merchants and will negotiate with high risk and delinquent merchants. This person will manage and work with merchants through the bankruptcy and administration process, determining the most effective strategy to secure repayment and/or collection of owed funds. The Special Credits Underwriter should be skilled in early identification and evaluation of deteriorating processing and financial situations in order to minimize losses. The ideal candidate has in-depth financial analysis knowledge, strong business acumen, refined analytical skills, and has exemplary written and oral communication and collaboration skills. The ability to exercise sound judgment and be resourceful in all things is imperative to success as a Commercial Underwriting Special Credit Underwriter.

Core Duties

  • Analyze company financial statements and bank statements to assess financial performance and position of the merchant
  • Assess business model risk and determine credit exposure risk and exposure projections
  • Monitor and manage high risk/high loss portfolio of accounts with emphasis on managing merchants who are in financial stress or showing business deterioration.
  • Collaborate with internal business partners, internal and external legal counsel, and risk management leadership to develop workout strategies, and negotiate acceptable terms and conditions to protect PayPal’s interests and achieve maximum recovery.   
  • Communicate PayPal’s position and lead the negotiations process.
  • Track progress of the workout process.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement of Underwriting best practices to ensure organization is competitive in the marketplace
  • Stay current on merchant industry trends that impact the Commercial Merchant segment.

Required Skills

  • Strong analytical skill - must be able to analyze complex data, draw meaningful conclusion, and make holistic business recommendations
  • Ability to approach problems in a quantitative and qualitative manner
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong collaboration skills, and the ability to build rapport with members of other departments.
  • Strong working knowledge of external systems, PC based internet and software applications (Internet, Microsoft Office - Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Familiarity with PayPal and the merchant processing industry, particularly risk and operational processes

Experience

  • 3+ years of merchant service work experience related to merchant underwriting and/or commercial lending
  • Solid financial statement analysis and in-depth knowledge of accounting principles
  • Experience in preparing underwriting packages and presenting cases to senior level leadership
  • Ability to develop, negotiate, and execute on remediation plans
  • Some knowledge of bankruptcy and bankruptcy proceedings, including Chapter 7 and 11 bankruptcy and the rights of creditors
  • Maintain knowledge of industry State and Federal laws, rules and regulations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience collaborating and building productive relationships across multiple departments.

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Economics, Statistics, Finance, Mathematics or equivalent experience required. MBA or related graduate degree preferred.
