The Solutions Engineer role is part of PayPal's Global Professional Services Organization. Their primary responsibility includes providing pre-sales and post-sales technical consulting, product function expertise and engineering support for merchants who are implementing PayPal Inc. payment processing services and software. Focusing on merchants with annual revenues from $1 million to $100 million or more, the Solution Engineer directly supports assigned sales and relationship representatives in North America as required both in the office and in the field (up to 30% travel required) throughout the pre-sales and sales process. The Solution Engineer ensures the quality and timeliness of all assigned merchant implementation efforts and acts as “voice of customer” when providing feedback to Product Managers on ease of use and new function/feature needs.


  • Provide merchants considering the use of PayPal payment processing solutions with business process analysis, product functionality review, and technical requirement definition services as requested in support of the Strategic Sales Leads pre-sales strategy. Work with internal stakeholders to understand requirements and create a proposed solution design.
  • Provide merchants who have committed to implement PayPal payment processing solutions with guidance on changing business processes, website workflow modifications, and reporting systems required to implement PayPal Inc. solutions into existing systems.
  • Facilitate merchant with creating sandbox accounts, provide technical development and coding support, and provide guidance to the merchant during testing and pre-launch activities.
  • Act as main point of contact for the merchant for all pre-sales related technical activities throughout the discovery phase and integration effort. Track all merchant engagement activity using provided tools such as Salesforce.
  • Generate and review in-depth technical information including sample code, white papers, FAQs, and snippets for distribution to PayPal customers.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and run test scenarios for technical issues with PayPal code, software, hardware, devices, and endpoints; communicate fixes or workarounds for issues.
  • Assist Sales teams to engage merchants in PayPal Inc. product implementations, and to move merchants toward Live-To-Site within targeted time frames.
  • Work with internal teams to ensure merchants implement PayPal Inc’s payment processing solutions with a high degree of quality and using optimal integration strategies and techniques.
  • Collect merchant feedback on ease-of-use and function/feature suitability for merchants’ processing needs. Provide feedback to Product Management on product improvement and enhancement needs.
  • Utilize Salesforce for the tracking / movement of merchant sales opportunities to allow for Sr. Level reporting and stage notifications.


  • Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or closely related quantitative discipline and 3 years of experience in the job offered or Master’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience with Internet Technologies including Web Services, SOAP, JavaScript, HTML/HTTP, and REST.
  • 3+ years of experience with JavaScript and other programming languages (C#, Ruby, Java, .NET, PHP, etc.).
  • 3+ years of retail merchant and/or Financial Services experience and knowledge either working directly for, or as a business partner.
  • Exceptional written, presentation and oral communication skills, and the ability to create and present solutions to merchants and partners.
  • Previous sales experience.
  • Ability to successfully interact and dynamically adapt communication styles with all levels of client organizations including C-level executives, middle management, finance, operations, technical/IT staff and line personnel.
