PayPal Commercial Underwriting is seeking a new Underwriting Analyst to join the team, and this position will hired in Singapore PayPal is the leading global online payment service built for the digital age. We now have over 300 million active customers around the world and handle almost a fifth of the world’s online payments. And we’re delivering the future of money – today. You can use PayPal anytime, anywhere, any way. PayPal continues to drive connected commerce across all channels - online, mobile and in-store. In Q4 2019 PayPal’s net payment volume was ~$200BN representing year on year growth of 22%. We are constantly innovating and creating experiences our customers love. The Global Enterprise Seller Risk team is responsible globally for the end to end management of seller risk for large enterprise sellers. These sellers process > $500,000 in payments per year with PayPal and comprise ~ 60% of our global processing volume. Understanding and closely managing the credit (insolvency) risks associated with these sellers is critical to our management of the portfolio. The credit risk arises as PayPal offers a type of guarantee to buyers for undelivered goods and services and if the seller becomes insolvent, PayPal bears the financial liability.

APAC Enterprise Portfolio Management under Global Enterprise Seller Risk team – Senior Underwriter

Location: Singapore

What does the role entail?

  • As a Senior Underwriter, you will develop risk views of PayPal sellers through robust analysis, leveraging your strong business and financial acumen, logical reasoning and superior communication skills to make clear recommendations for balanced and timely risk mitigation. Primarily focusing on APAC markets (Australia, SEA, India, etc)
  • As a senior team members, support the regional head and team manager in building up underwriting strategies/framework/policies and guidelines
  • Timely assessments of merchant credit risk over the merchant life cycle.
  • Analyze and interpret financial statements, developing a view of the merchants’ financial health and its implications to PayPal’s risk and seller relationships.
  • Analyze and interpret merchant & industry business models, credit reports, merchant processing history, internal PayPal data, background investigations, bank and trade references, etc. developing a view on their impact to PayPal risk and seller relationships.
  • Conduct merchant assessments in view of PayPal Acceptable Uses, Federal and State Regulatory Compliance, Credit Card Compliance and Legal Considerations.
  • Estimate financial exposures to PayPal from sellers, using reasonable assumptions, and assess the need for and extent of risk mitigation measures. 
  • Develop a holistic point of view on assessed merchants, proposing appropriate recommendations or making decisions for mitigating PayPal’s risk and managing seller experience.
  • Develop insights on merchants, sectors and markets based on assessments, peer analyses, etc.
  • Clearly articulate the recommendations and assessment drivers to stakeholders as needed (ex: risk management teams, sales units, PayPal merchants, etc.). Communicate professionally and effectively with cross-functional stakeholders throughout.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough documentation and audit trails of underwriting assessments, reports, methodologies, etc. in a timely manner.
  • Monitor seller performance across portfolio segments, as needed
  • Ensure appropriate escalation to, and follow up with, internal departments and management on issues that may arise.
  • Provide feedback on data, tools and assessments for continuous improvement, along with on-going development of policies, products, tools, and procedures for process enhancement.
  • Support the planning, testing & adoption of new policies, processes, data sources, activities, tools, etc., providing timely and constructive feedback, collaborating with the relevant stakeholders.
  • Other opportunities & projects relevant to managing the financial risk of PayPal’s sellers.

Skills: You would -

  • Have a college degree and/or professional qualification in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related fields, or equivalent work experience
  • Have 4+ years of relevant experience, in underwriting or credit risk assessment
  • Be experienced in financial statement analysis, financial modeling and/or valuation
  • Be comfortable with complex data and analytics to draw meaningful insights
  • Be a team player, with strong interpersonal & communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Be highly curious and thoughtful - a proactive self-starter with a sense of urgency and bias for action, un a fast-paced environment
  • Fluent in English. Additional local language in APAC as a plus
  • Experience in Australia markets is a plus
  • Be familiar with MS Office, Salesforce, internet research & database tools. SQL is a plus, but not essential.
