PayPal is looking for a fast-learning lawyer to join our growing team. This position is based in London and will report to the UK Credit Legal Director. To succeed in this challenging role, candidates should be self-motivated, independent and well-organised with excellent interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills. An ability to work in a matrixed environment with multiple stakeholders is essential. PayPal is a global company and the successful candidate will need to have flexibility to work with and occasionally accommodate colleagues in different time zones (particularly Europe, the United States and Asia).

Senior Legal Counsel (m/f/d)

Job Responsibilities:

  • Working with the PayPal UK and wider European Legal team on consumer and business credit matters include product development, credit agreements, credit promotions, and providing advice on credit regulation to the business.
  • Advising on and negotiating agreements with key partners, payment processors and financial institutions to further the expansion of the PayPal Credit business.
  •  Providing clear, timely and actionable legal advice to cross-functional stakeholders on products and features being developed for and launched in the UK and elsewhere.
  • Acting as a trusted advisor to PayPal’s management on key UK and EU regulatory matters impacting the business.
  • Maintaining and creating repeatable, efficient legal advice processes.
  • Identifying productivity improvements and helping to drive and direct process changes to ensure continuing efficiency.
  • Providing training on relevant topics.
  • Helping to effectively manage legal budget and cost controls where required.

Job Requirements:

  • Admitted as a solicitor with at least 6 years’ post-admission experience in a law firm or as in-house counsel
  • Expertise in credit (banking, payments, financial services or fintech experience desirable) or equivalent
  • Ability to identify relevant business and legal issues proactively, evaluate the risks and find creative solutions particularly to novel situations
  • A strong communicator who is able to explain complex legal concepts and requirements to a range of audiences
  • Ability to take ownership of matters, knowing when to take decisions and when to escalate
  • Highly resourceful and collaborative team player, adept at working with cross-functional teams
  • Fluent English required, any other European languages may be useful
