PayPal is looking for a talented, innovative, and passionate security engineer to join the Cryptography Platform team. As a Security Engineer you will help build and maintain the next generation of cryptography services that protect PayPal’s critical data stored at rest and moving in transit. You will be responsible for the design, deployment and operational maintenance of hardware security module (HSM) services, secrets managers and private certificate authority services that reside onsite and in cloud environments. You will support the generation of cryptographic key material that resides in the HSMs and cloud key management services. You will support the migration of cryptography services to cloud environments. You will specialize in building highly available, scalable and durable environments to support PayPal global growth. You will collaborate with extremely talented peers to support our customers’ business and technical requirements and you will own the delivery and execution of service excellence.

Job Responsibilities

  • Participate in the design, deployment, testing and operational support of highly scalable hardware based cryptographic services
  • Rapid prototype and experiment with new technologies and capabilities to deliver next-generation services
  • Support the build out of cryptographic services in cloud environments (AWS, GCP and Azure)
  • Review current build, deployment and operational maintenance processes and incorporate automation to enhance efficiency
  • Integrate services into monitoring tools such as SNMP, Syslog and Prometheus health logging and set up service level reporting and alerting
  • Track and report service level metrics related to service health
  • Support configuration of HSMs in on-site PayPal offices and provide on-site support on data centers to support installation, maintenance, and periodic audits
  • Participate in key generation ceremonies that occur at an on-site PayPal office
  • Develop and maintain service level documentation
  • Be the subject matter expert and provide guidance to team members and key stakeholders


  • 3-5 years of experience building security products with a preference for cryptography products
  • Experience deploying, managing, and maintaining hardware security modules HSMs (Thales Luna HSMs, Thales PayShield HSMs, Fortanix HSMs)
  • Experience deploying services in cloud environments (GCP, AWS, Azure)
  • Experience with Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Experience integrating services with databases
  • Knowledge and experience with network protocols

Desired Skills:

  • Symmetric Cryptography experience
  • Asymmetric Cryptography experience
  • Payment systems
  • Dual control/split knowledge
  • Experience deploying COTs applications on Linux OS
  • Experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) and implementation of CI/CD automation (e.g. Terraform, Packer, Docker, Ansible/Puppet)
  • Scripting language experience with such as Python, Go, BASH scripting
