PayPal is seeking a highly skilled and self-motivated Production Operations Manager to lead the Xoom Production Operations team within PayPal.

The charter of the Production Operations Team is to provide 24x7 incident response, develop and maintain automation and tooling, deploy software developed and tested by Xoom Product teams, and maintain compliance with all business, security, and regulatory requirements for Production Operations in Xoom. As Manager of Xoom Production Operations, you will be managing and supporting a team of high-performing DevOps engineers. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Overall management of the team, including leadership, performance management, culture, planning and execution.
  • Promote a culture of automation, transparency, and accountability in everything ProdOps does.
  • Own the virtual machine infrastructure in support of the Xoom application stack as we continue our immutable infrastructure journey.
  • Maintain both cloud-based and on-premises data center systems during our cloud migration journey.
  • Partner with Cloud Cost Management teams to minimize infrastructure cost while maximizing resource efficiency and performance.
  • Research and adopt new technologies and strategic initiatives to reduce change friction and promote availability, e.g., Kubernetes.
  • Establish and maintain cross-team relationships to promote trust and collaboration.
  • Create, review, and improve documentation for tools and processes used in support of the infrastructure.
  • Manage the team’s on-call PagerDuty rotation schedule.
  • Lead troubleshooting and triage efforts for ProdOps during incidents. Assist with development of root cause analysis and participate in postmortem exercises.
  • Attract and retain top talent due to growth or attrition, maintaining the performance, reputation, and unique culture of the team.

Required Skills:

  • Excellent communication, time management, prioritization, and context-switching skills.
  • Strong written and verbal proficiency in English and Spanish.
  • Several years’ experience administering Production Linux systems (RHEL/CentOS preferred) in a 24x7 environment.
  • Scripting or coding experience with one or more languages (e.g., bash, python).
  • Strong understanding of network architecture and protocols for LAN and WAN (TCP, UDP, ICMP, ARP, BGP).
  • Strong understanding of the OSI layering model, with a focus on Layer 7 protocols (HTTP/S, DNS, NFS, SMTP, SSH).
  • Understand basic cryptography, TLS handshake protocol, and certificates.
  • Familiarity with virtualization architectures and systems (VMware preferred).
  • Able to work independently and responsibly in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience managing technical teams with a 24x7 on-call rotation.
  • Experience and/or strong understanding of docker, terraform, packer, ansible, Jenkins.
  • Technical understanding of, or experience supporting, datastore technologies such as MySQL, Elasticsearch, Cassandra, Redis, Zookeeper, Kafka.
  • Experience fulfilling PCI and other security oversight requirements.

Candidates will be expected to primarily work remotely full time for the foreseeable future, subject to change as conditions permit.
