PayPal's Cloud Infrastructure organization is in a transformational journey building very mature DevOps capabilities through Infrastructure-as-Code and Platform engineering to manage its massive infrastructure fleet at scale. This is a diverse and geo-distributed team of very talented and passionate engineers grounded on solid engineering principles and operational excellence working on simplifying and solving some of the complex problems in managing an internet scale infrastructure. We're looking to hire a very seasoned, hands-on and results-oriented Engineering Leader for the Infrastructure Configuration Management team, which is a foundational and critical function of the Cloud Infrastructure organization. Strong technical background, demonstrated experience in leading Infrastructure/Platform Engineering work at scale and great people skills to build highly competent and productive teams are key qualifications and traits to be successful in this role.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design and implement short and long term strategic plans to meet current and future requirements around engineering and operations of Infrastructure Configuration Management (currently with Puppet and Ansible)
  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and associated training plans for the administration and appropriate use of configurations and configuration management infrastructure
  • Partner closely within the Infrastructure organization and the larger organization outside Infrastructure to standardize on the configuration baseline and lifecycle management to ensure configuration compliance from the time an asset is provisioned through decom
  • Lead engineering and operational efforts in driving the configuration management coverage across the fleet
  • Lead the tech refresh efforts to upgrade the Puppet infrastructure across the fleet to standardize on one consistent version and further maintain/upgrade on an ongoing basis
  • Develop a software lifecycle model to manage configurations with all the engineering discipline as we do for code – like CI/CD for configuration modules, audit-ability and traceability of configuration deployments etc.
  • Strategize and work towards convergence and unification of siloed configuration management across the organization
  • Perform R&D to strategize for long term to bring in the best and most modern tools and technologies to manage configurations at scale; thorough analysis of Puppet vs Ansible vs Chef vs others and recommendations backed with data to influence management to take right long-term decisions
  • Establish a professional services model to channel majority of the configuration module development into a single ownership for consistency

Qualification & Experience:

  • Bachelor or Master degree preferably in the field of Computer Science/Information Technology or other related fields
  • 12+ years of relevant work experience (at least 2+ years as a Manager)
  • Deep understanding and hands-on experience in configuration management for a large scale infrastructure fleet, preferably using Puppet
  • Deep understanding and thorough working knowledge of Unix/Linux based operating systems (Ubuntu, Red Hat, OEL, CentOS) and good knowledge of infrastructure components across the stack
  • Hands-on experience in Linux/Systems administration, scripting/programming and troubleshooting
  • Excellent knowledge and hands-on experience of DevOps and Infrastructure as Code in designing and implementing engineering solutions for infrastructure management and operations (in any of the infrastructure stack; any prior experience in the OS image management space is a plus!)
  • Good experience managing engineers distributed across geographies and timezones; ability to naturally lead and collaborate across very diverse teams
