Engineering Director

The “Growth Markets Engineering Team” is responsible for developing and rolling out new products for PayPal’s customer base in markets seeing high commerce growth across the world. The business aspiration is to double down and drive the next wave of growth for our buyers and sellers in hypergrowth markets in Asia and Latin America. The products to be launched will accelerate new user acquisitions, provide platform expansion through ubiquity, bring new revenue through partnerships, adhere to local market regulations, and contribute actively to PayPal's mission of democratizing financial services and service 1 billion daily active users globally.

The Role:

The role is for an Engineering Director, working on building efficient and futuristic platform capabilities and customer experiences for PayPal's diverse consumer and merchant base in our Growth Markets. In this role, the Engineering Director will be accountable for all aspects of the end-to-end customer journey in partnership with product counterparts and other functions across the organization, and hence have immense opportunities to influence various stakeholders across PayPal and drive impactful outcomes for the business and our customers.

The role will entail leading and growing a talented engineering team, nurturing best engineering practices, collaborating closely across various cross-functional teams, meeting customers, and gathering market needs by working with business units in these markets. The scope of problems to solve is large, and this team will be in the center of all the action for growing and scaling our payments platforms in these markets. The focus is on agility, time to market and innovation.

The ideal candidate is an individual with experiences building large scale systems by engaging across the full software lifecycle, from system design, development implementation and sustaining the products. Business acumen, hands-on technology skills, ability to demonstrate leadership skills, influence without authority, positive work ethic and a collaborative mindset are key to the success of this role.

The Responsibilities

Engineering Ownership:

  • Responsible for designing, implementing, and delivering state of the art solutions for Growth markets of PayPal that are in accordance with customer expectations, business aspirations and platform principles.
  • Collaborate between various internal in our global product and engineering organizations, UX designers, content designers, platform and infrastructure teams, database teams, release engineering, site reliability engineering, analytics etc. and external stakeholders such as technology vendor partners, technology service providers and staffing vendor partners.
  • Implement and enforce best practices of software engineering that bring agility, quality, performance, scale, security, and efficiency for all products being delivered. Constantly adapt and experiment new best practices followed within the industry.
  • Understand and enriching technical architecture, design, and implementation patterns by working within PayPal’s cross-functional technology teams.
  • Build execution momentum by identifying patterns that work well and transforming the anti-patterns that inhibits team’s progress.
  • Focus on innovation as a key cultural element, and optimize for efficiencies by bringing unique solutions to the table and questioning status quo and refactoring existing code base.
  • Manage teams that are accountable for all facets of software development like architecture, design, implementation, quality engineering, release and monitoring.
  • Embrace a data and metrics driven culture to help make informed decisions, to help prioritize work, as well as to inspire followership of the purpose being pursued.

Customer Centricity

  • Demonstrate a customer centric mindset as part of day-to-day work and imbibe the culture among team members.
  • Take deep interest in the customer journey of our consumers and merchants in order to understand the challenges they face, and optimization opportunities for the product.
  • Participate in Customer Discovery sessions to understand the voice of the customers through virtual and in-person interactions with our buyer and seller bases.

Business Partnership

  • Align closely with business goals by understanding them carefully and drive engineering efficiencies for effective execution.
  • Function effectively in a dynamically changing competitive and regulatory environment and manage continuously changing business needs.
  • Actively meet with Sales and Integration teams, shadow them during merchant visits and handhold the business teams to aid them with new and existing integration patterns.
  • Provide strategic inputs on business opportunities, and propose innovative product constructs that can be experimented in the market.

  • Exceptional client and stakeholder relationship skills including the ability to identifying the requirements from a given set of initiatives / feature requests, negotiating the requirements to drive iterative launches, and the ability to recommend and suggest alternative business approaches based on engineering inputs.
  • Empathetic leadership to build and grow inclusive and high-performance engineering teams.
  • Consistent desire to learn broad industry trends, best practices across teams, and implementing change management with the focus to refine the engineering crafts of the teams
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a varied set of audiences
  • Be a quick learner undaunted by complex systems. Take risks and thrive in an environment of constant change.
  • Good oratory skills and experience participating in ecosystem activities like conferences, hackathons, open source platforms etc. is a preferred trait.

Technical Hands-on Skills

  • Strong object-oriented programming skills and expertise.
  • Deep understanding of various web scale design paradigms.
  • Good understanding of mobile technologies and frameworks.
  • Experience with test frameworks and Functional Test frameworks.
  • Exposure to one or more server-side scripting technologies is a plus.
  • Highly Competent in Enterprise Architecture/ Software design & Implementation
  • Good knowledge in REST API’s, Web Services.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, AWS / GCP is desired.
  • Experience and Exposure to Terraform and Ansible is preferred.
  • Very strong foundational knowledge in Data Structures, Algorithms, SQL/NoSQL, Operating Systems, and Software Engineering

Educational Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science or Master’s in Computer Science degree or related field from an accredited college or university with around 15 years in the software technology field.
