Small and Medium-sized Businesses (SMBs) are the are the lifeblood of society, representing ~50% of global GDP, they are a critical part of PayPal’s business. The PayPal SMB team is accountable for the business and financial performance of PayPal’s SMB segment globally. The team sets the global commercial priorities for how we help SMBs grow and manage their business using PayPal’s platform, by helping define differentiated value propositions and effective sales, servicing and marketing strategies, and unlocking new growth opportunities via partnerships and new product development. The team oversees the cross-functional execution of said priorities and leads cross-functional commercial initiatives aimed at improving the performance of PayPal’s SMB portfolio. Latin America (LATAM) is considered a Growth market, where PayPal is looking to grow its SMB customer base on the back of a strong suite of services – including online payments, point-of-sale software and lending products – and a trusted network of partners.

The Director of Small and Medium-sized Business (SMB) for Latin America, reporting to the Global Senior Director, SMB, will lead a team that is accountable for the financial performance and future growth of PayPal’s SMB portfolio in LATAM, with a focus on Mexico and Brazil. They will be responsible for defining SMB priorities for their region based on our global commercial SMB strategy & priorities as well as regional/local market dynamics, overseeing and coordinating the cross-functional execution of these priorities with e.g. local sales, marketing, partner, servicing and product teams.

This person will need a deep understanding of the needs of LATAM SMBs and will track local trends and the performance of PayPal’s local SMB portfolio in order to identify opportunities and risks, and adapt plans accordingly. They will need to provide leadership and work effectively with cross-functional teams to make sure local stakeholders are aligned behind a single SMB plan, and establish regular operating cadences to review business performance, report progress and adjust plans when necessary. Partnerships are one of the key growth levers for PayPal’s SMB business, so this person will be expected to articulate a clear partner strategy, direct the partner team and actively lead or participate in partnership negotiations.



Responsibilities
 

  • Accountable for the financial performance of the LATAM SMB portfolio
  • Define regional/local SMB priorities based on global commercial SMB strategy and drive alignment across SMB plans and priorities of other functions
  • Oversee and reduce friction in the execution of local SMB priorities across functions (e.g.  sales, marketing, partner, product, website, pricing, risk, compliance, customer service)
  • Provide leadership and hands-on execution coordination of global and local cross-functional commercial initiatives
  • Develop a partner strategy, identify potential partners and lead or participate in partnership negotiations.
  • Lead the LATAM SMB team with team members based in Mexico and Brazil
  • Analyze, interpret, and communicate SMB performance to global and regional leaders and other stakeholders
  • Identify risks and opportunities based on deep understanding of SMB performance drivers
  • Identify unique regional/local SMB needs, market trends and changes to the competitive landscape
  • Develop, propose and implement changes to strategy and tactics to improve performance, or in response to changing market conditions
  • Share insights and best practices with SMB leaders in other regions; collaborate with SMB teams around the world on global SMB initiatives

Skills/Experience
 

  • Experience at the forefront of the B2B sector with a passion for serving SMBs in an innovative and global environment
  • Experience in leading and influencing large cross-functional teams to a clear outcome
  • Experience in business case development, market and opportunity sizing and preparing strategic recommendations for C-suite executives
  • Ability to drive cross-functional collaboration through formal & informal leadership and influencing rather than hierarchical structures
  • Demonstrated ability to simplify complex topics while not losing sight of details
  • Combination of strategic thinking with hands on execution
  • Strong people management skills, ability to coach and develop talent
  • Strong commercial skills
  • Leading by example rather than advising from the sidelines
  • Strong quantitative analytical skills, able to manage through data and insights to build compelling and innovative strategies
  • Very strong customer focus, naturally including customer perspective in plans, decisions and actions
  • Experience leading complex strategic and operational initiatives, working through technical, operational, legal/policy and business issues
  • Experience in developing partner strategies, partner management and/or partner sales
  • 10+ years working in a business strategy or commercial management capacity
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a natural talent for crafting and presenting compelling recommendations at C-level
  • MBA or equivalent degree.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish. Portuguese language skills a plus.
  • Experience in the fin-tech or payments space a plus
