PayPal is seeking a highly motivated legal leader with a proven track record to be responsible for the delivery of legal and regulatory advice to PayPal’s business operations in the UK. Based in Richmond, this role reports into the Head of Legal PayPal Europe, and will be a member of the UK executive leadership team and European legal leadership team.

The Director will be a hands-on, flexible self-starter who is comfortable advising stakeholders on a variety of complex legal and business matters including financial services, payment services regulations, regulatory compliance, general corporate law, consumer rights, litigation, competition law and policy, intellectual property, data privacy and data security.  S/he will be known for their judgement and pragmatic approach to problem solving and be accustomed to a fast-paced, international and matrixed environment with an emphasis on advancing new technologies.  The person must bring a global perspective and have experience of leading teams through periods of change and ambiguity (eg. Brexit). The successful candidate must bring a proactive and operational orientation and have prior experience of managing legal teams and effectively allocating departmental resources to support strategic goals and objectives.  The successful candidate must possess a high degree of emotional intelligence and the ability to supervise and support senior and less experienced team members.   The Director must be able to work collaboratively and have strong influencing and mentoring skills.  Team engagement and open communication as well as the ability to forge close working relationships with colleagues will be paramount to success.  This individual must be a keen listener who is patient, diplomatic and open-minded.  The ability to be a trusted advisor and have a strong rapport with the UK executive leadership team and global legal leadership team will be particularly important as will be the ability to lead and inspire the UK legal team.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead the legal team responsible for advising PayPal’s UK business operations on a wide variety of legal and regulatory matters as well as commercial and contract management support, product development and legal risk management.
  • Participate in the overall management of the organisation as an integral member of the PayPal UK executive leadership team and European legal leadership team.
  • Ensure delivery of balanced and pragmatic legal advice and support to cross-functional teams across PayPal UK including Sales, Product Development, Risk, Compliance, Finance, Government Relations and Communication. 
  • Advise stakeholders on the development and implementation of new services, laws and regulatory frameworks in the UK and proactively lead and contribute to strategic initiatives as required.
  • Manage, develop and motivate the UK legal team, supervising and supporting them in a collaborative and inclusive manner, and build a pipeline of future legal talent by providing opportunities for career development.
  • Lead the strategy for the UK legal team overseeing the development and implementation of functional goals and objectives aligned to the business.
  • Identify and implement best practices and drive efficiencies within the UK legal function through improved systems, processes and resource allocation.
  • Manage the UK legal function’s resources and priorities, engaging outside counsel and experts when necessary.

Requirements:

  • Min. 10+ years relevant experience in a tier one law firm or as a senior member of an in-house legal team supporting a significant international corporation or financial institution.
  • LLB or JD and admitted to practice law within the United Kingdom or equivalent.
  • Experience in leading highly engaged and qualified teams and managing legal department resources.
  • Proven ability to work in multi-cultural teams and to render advice in a fast-paced, challenging environment quickly, independently and decisively.
  • Experience working with, and presenting to, executive Senior Stakeholder internally and externally.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop strong relationships across all levels of the organisation, a positive attitude, thoughtfulness as well as collaboration and creativity.
