We are seeking an exceptional leader to lead a talented geographically distributed engineering team to build a world class AI/ML platform for PayPal. Join us as we pursue our disruptive new vision to democratize AI/ML across PayPal to support a diverse set of use cases, from conversational agents that leverage state-of-the-art language models, to payment routing optimization systems, to some of the industry’s most complex graph models that power near real-time risk detection for millions of payments per day. The AI/ML Platform will be pivotal in enabling delightful experiences to our 375 Million Customers and 27+ Million Merchants, in addition to advancing capabilities to win 1 billion daily active users. Machine learning is instrumental to PayPal’s strategy; as our CEO Dan Schulman stated earlier this year, we are building solutions that “...transcend payments, commerce and financial services, all of that on a common platform, all of that leveraging common data elements and machine learning."

The Director of Engineering for AI/ML will drive strategy and execution in building platform at scale, winning in the market and delivering on commitments. This stack is being built from the ground up on modern open-source, cloud-based technologies with sponsorship from the highest levels of management to accelerate AI/ML adoption within PayPal Inc. Given the rapid pace and evolution of tools and frameworks in this space, the leader will require extensive familiarity as well as ongoing commitment to staying current with many technologies and tools within the data, analytics, and AI/ML space. This role is responsible for coaching and mentoring outstanding platform engineers to reach their highest potential. The team is uniquely positioned to bring together ground-breaking innovations and build solutions for some of the most skilled data science and machine learning teams.

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead and inspire a high-performing engineering team to build and scale a highly secure, reliable and performant AI platform to enable a standardized end to end model development lifecycle with delightful user experience 
  • Drive a results-oriented culture with a strong focus on engineering excellence, execution, and craftmanship as a Customer Champion
  • Develop trusted partnership and collaboration with business, product, data scientists and architecture leaders to drive optimized platform product delivery; Manage stakeholder planning and communications ensuring key outcomes
  • Recruit, coach, and mentor the best engineering and management talent
  • Ability to lead complex technical and data science discussions and engagements that involve multiple personas including data scientists, data engineers, analysts and developers 
  • Anticipate and aggressively remove obstacles that slow down or prevent from delivering on product and program objectives. Balance urgent and effective action, commitment to excellence, and taking initiative to resolve problems; holds internal stakeholders accountable where appropriate
  • Strong communication, listening, interpersonal, influencing, and negotiation skills; able to convey important messages in a clear and compelling manner
  • Develop loyalty and commitment in others by communicating clear expectations, developing and mentoring direct reports, and setting an example in one’s own behavior

Personal Qualities, Knowledge, Experience and Skills Required

  • Solid track record of over-achieving engineering and platform delivery and scaling targets in high volume, innovative and fast-paced high-pressure environment; proven results in delivery on platform product
  • Global mindset with ability to think about culture, language, and other aspects when putting the customer at the center of all outcomes 
  • 15+ years’ engineering experience with a focus on technology platform, data and/or machine learning. Knowledge of public cloud infrastructure such as Google, AWS, Azure is preferred
  • Working experience in data & analytics field, including new and emerging technologies in Machine Learning/Deep Learning, AI, and big data 
  • 8+ years in engineering leadership role with proven leadership skills and ability to practice strong ownership, drive change in a large, matrixed organization
  • Very high EQ and ability to empathize and communicate with customers and stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Strong strategic planning and large-scale operational skills; ability to build and lead a team across geographically distributed locations 
  • Passion for leading and developing direct reports; providing guidance, consultation, and opportunities towards improving their professional skill set
  • Excellent time management skills with ability to manage a large, diverse set of to-do’s – vigorously prioritize, stay on top of multiple work streams, monitor progress, hold owners accountable
  • Communication style motivated by brevity and purposeful outcomes with experience interfacing with executives
