PayPal’s Global Data Sciences team is responsible for developing and enhancing machine learning and data mining capabilities, which are vital in PayPal’s top-of-the-line data-driven decisions. We are a group of data scientists and problem solvers with strong analytical, mathematical, and programming skills and like to approach various kinds of challenges in complex environments.

A typical day for the Cyber Data Scientist includes:

The Counter Fraud Technology team is looking for an experienced data scientist with knowledge in cybersecurity. The team is a small multi-disciplinary R&D team that holds a wide arrange of responsibilities. The team designs, develops and maintains a state of the art system for combating fraud and conducts technological research on tools and methods used by fraudsters.

 The team is in search of a data scientist that can plan, execute, and lead novel research efforts for the team, aimed at identifying fraudsters’ tools of the trade.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Apply data science tools and technological expertise in the cyberspace to real-life problems in PayPal’s ecosystem.
  • Generate leads to identify technologies used by fraudsters against PayPal and its customers.
  • Work with large volumes of data; extract and manipulate large datasets using standard tools such as Python, Hadoop, Hive, Teradata, Spark, and more

About You

  • Familiarity with the cyber-crime domain and understanding common attack methods
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or similar.
  • 1-2 years of experience as a data scientist.
  • Familiar with Machine Learning algorithm, methodologies, and tools such as SciKit, Pandas, Numpy, Tensorflow or similar – a must
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Code writing capability in any programming language (Python, R, Java, Scala, etc.)
  • Experience in network protocols and deep-packet inspection (DPI) – an advantage
  • Experience in Big Data analysis – an advantage
  • Out-of-the-box thinker, self-motivated with a can-do attitude
  • Excellent spoken and written English
