Roles & Responsibilities

PayPal is looking for a talented and experienced research scientist who is passionate about applying cryptography research to solve financial services and technology problems. Interested candidate should possess a collaborative and open mindset, and be willing to take up challenges during the research and development lifecycle. The candidate should have both theoretical and hands-on experience in at least two of the following areas:

  • Cryptography - preferably in the fields of secure multiparty computation, privacy preserving technology, post-quantum cryptography and trusted computing

  • Distributed ledger security

  • Data Integrity and Security

  • Network Security protocols and related technologies (TLS, Noise, PKI etc.)

  • Good foundation on (theoretical) security models for cryptographic protocols as well as Mathematical understanding of elliptic curve and lattice-based cryptography

  • Programming experience in at least one of the following: C++, Rust, Python, Go

  • Security Architecture & Solution Design

Primary Responsibilities

The candidate will join the information security research and outreach team. Working alongside with senior cryptography strategist, information security engineers and program manager, the researcher will conduct technology research to assess the security risk & benefits of emerging technology, apply security research to strengthen PayPal’s capability on technology oversight, develop technology demonstrator based on business use cases and write technical paper. The researcher can expect to:

  • Engage with senior research lead and stakeholders to craft an information security research project that is interesting, meaningful for PayPal and the wider ecosystem

  • Engage cross-functional and business teams to understand the business needs, existing gaps, use cases and propose suitable research plan

  • Deliver on research plan by increasing technology readiness and producing research outputs such as proof-of-concept, minimum viable product and technical white papers etc.

  • Present research project findings to Information Security leaders and relevant stakeholders to either seed technology adoption and/or strengthen security technology oversight capability

Requirements - What we are looking for:

  • Working professionals with at least ten years relevant working experience, a PhD. degree in Computer Science/ Engineering, Information Security/ Systems, Applied Mathematics/ Mathematical Science, Engineering or related degree

  • Advanced cryptography knowledge in secure multiparty computation, zero-knowledge proof, homomorphic encryption and private set intersection is preferred

  • Programming experience in either C++, Rust, Python, Go

  • Customer champion, passionate about doing and applying R&D to real-world problem, as well as willing to take up challenges during the R&D lifecycle

  • Possess a curious mind and is willing to learn new and emerging security technology areas

  • Ability to work well within a team environment and an interest in deepening knowledge of real-world information security principles

  • Strong analytical skills along with the necessary communication skills necessary to document the processes and actions taken to complete each assignment

  • Ability to do technical writing is a must
